Publisher's summary

Bookish suffragist Catriona Campbell is busy: An ailing estate, academic writer’s block, a tense time for England’s women’s rights campaign—the last thing she needs is to be stuck playing host to her father’s distractingly attractive young colleague.

A BookBub Best Romance of Winter 2024!

Deeply introverted Catriona lives for her work at Oxford and her fight for women’s suffrage. She dreams of romance, too, but since all her attempts at love have ended badly, she now keeps her desires firmly locked inside her head—until she climbs out of a Scottish loch after a good swim and finds herself rather exposed to her new colleague.

Elias Khoury has wheedled his way into Professor Campbell’s circle under false pretenses: he did not come to Oxford to classify ancient artefacts, he is determined to take them back to his homeland in the Middle East. Winning Catriona’s favor could be the key to his success. Unfortunately, seducing the coolly intense lady scholar quickly becomes a mission in itself and his well-laid plans are in danger of derailing....

Forced into close proximity in Oxford’s hallowed halls, two very different people have to face the fact that they might just be a perfect match. Soon, a risky new game begins that asks Catriona one more time to put her heart and wildest dreams at stake.

Critic reviews

"Dunmore writes the smartest, sexiest historical romances out there...Sparks fly as chess matches both real and figurative play out between the two whip-smart lovers—The Gentleman’s Gambit absolutely sizzles!"—Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author

"Rich with passion, brimming with history, and alive with feminist insight, The Gentleman’s Gambit is a literary treasure trove for lovers of Victorian romance. Evie Dunmore once again proves her mastery of the genre, crafting a story that resonates as profoundly with modern sensibilities as it does with historical authenticity. Absolutely brilliant from the first page to the last."—Mimi Matthews, USA Today bestselling author

"The perfect finale to one of my favourite historical romance series ever. I adored Catriona's story. Evie Dunmore writing is always beautiful, thoughtful, smart and sexy— in short, she's so talented she makes me horribly jealous. Bump The Gentleman's Gambit up your TBR immediately."—Beth O'Leary, international bestselling author

Sensual, Intelligent and Beautiful.

A thoroughly enjoyable ending to a wonderfully thought out series. Will be one of my favorite to reread in the future.

Tour de force

Evil Dunmore’s writing is brilliant storytelling that pulls together threads of history and weaves them through the experience of her characters. This 4th installment of the quartet is an absolute delight, and the complexity of the heroine unfolds beautifully throughout the narrative. Hats off to our brilliant narrator for making all 4 books in this series an absolute joy to listen to.

Saving the Best for Last…

I’m so glad to see a Catriona get her story. I loved this story. The narration was in keeping with the other three books in the series. I love ED’s writing. She brings real historical issues and triumphs to light woven into stories of love, determination, optimism, and realism. The epilogue had me reaching for a tissue in this one. These women became real to me throughout these stories. Their victories made me feel like I was reading a journal of my grandmothers. Don’t skip past this series, but make sure to listen to them in order. I’ve listened to about 600 audiobooks in the last two years and this series is still my favorite.

Great conclusion to the series

I loved Catriona and Elias’s story. Since this was the last book in the series, it was a bit heavy on tying up the storylines from the other books, which I loved because I found the suffragist cause extremely compelling and I adore the characters of the other books. This one isn’t my favorite of the series (that would go to Lady Lucinda’s story in the 2nd book), but I completely adored it and I feel a hole in chest knowing the series is over.

My favorite of the series!

This is my favorite romance I've read in years. I truly felt like I could feel the characters fall deeply in love. Catriona is a neurodivergent queen and Elias is my new gold standard for romance heros. I will be listening to this one again!

A good bit of history

This one feels a little too long at times. I didn’t fact check the history but it gets pretty into the weeds for a romance. Some people might love that. As always the characters are very likable. This one feels like it fills out all the stories whereas the others were much more focus on the FMC. Good payoff for a slow burn.

A great ED Romance let down by the narrator

The narrators voice, apart from being monotone, was too old as Catriona's voice. She did not sound like a 25yo. Rather her and the other suffragettes sounded like middle aged ladies chatting. It was very distracting.

More care should have gone into pronouncing the Arabic/non English words correctly.

What a beautiful love story

I fell in love with this series 4 books ago and I’m devastated it’s over :( It is SO rare to find spicy novels that are this thoughtfully researched and written. I love this author’s narrative voice and I cannot wait to read her next book. Oh! And the narrator is excellent— her interpretation of the characters is flawless ❤️

Best Historical Novels Ever

THE GENTLEMAN'S GAMBIT, fourth and last in author Evie Dunmore's League of Extraordinary Women series, brings all of their stories to a satisfying conclusion. Not only does the last of the four heroines, Katrina, find an unexpected love interest, with many spicy love scenes, but we also get to catch up on the lives of the heroines from the previous books. Meanwhile, the hateful laws restricting women's rights that this group has worked long and hard to overturn are soon due for reckoning.

I adore these books and the characters Evie Dunmore has drawn so very well. The intensity of their cause, the cleverness and strategy of their approach, and the balance between their love interests and the status of women are perfectly blended.

These stories are spectacularly narrated by Elizabeth Jasicki.

Wow, beautiful.

This was absolutely stunning. My favorite of the series. It really spoke to me personally. Thank you for writing a novel that so lovingly speaks of Lebanon. That gives it such humanity and beauty. Thank you for writing about being an immigrant. About loving your home but not being able to stay. Thank you for writing about love across two cultures.
