About this listen

“Dunmore is my new find in historical romance. Her A League of Extraordinary Women series is extraordinary.”—Julia Quinn, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“This series balances friendship, politics, history, and romance in just the right mix.”—U.S. Representative Katie Porter

A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford suffragists in which a fiercely independent vicar's daughter takes on a powerful duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order.

England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the Queen's command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can't deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.

Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn't be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn't claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring...or could he?

Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke....

“With her sterling debut, Evie Dunmore dives into a fresh new space in historical romance that hits all the right notes.”—Entertainment Weekly

“There is nothing quite so satisfying as seeing such a man brought to his knees by a beautiful woman with nothing to her name except an inviolable sense of her own self-worth.”—NPR

Wow It was more than FANTASTIC JUST LISTEN TO IT!

This book was so incredible I don’t know where to begin. I found myself cheering for Miss Archer and could relate to her activities vying for freedom for women when I went to activities like that in Boston in the 70,s vying for more equal pay for women. It struck a nerve and thankfulness that these women went before us and paved the way. To think back then whatever they owned when they were married was then given to their husband and they had no say in it and they could not even vote. I so enjoyed her time at Oxford and her falling in love with the Duke yet refusing to marry him because she didn’t want to ruin him …. How kind and respectful she was …. I was appalled at the views of the Queen especially when you realize how little freedom women had at that time. This book is so well women and the narrator so incredibly well. Narration is so important it always determines whether I buy the book or not. I have 260 books in my Audible library and listen to at least five a week and this one and The Ravanel series with Lisa Kleypas are at the top of my list as I have listened to that series at least many times over. You just know a book is really good when you want to listen to it Iver and over. I was raised on a horse farm so I really loved all the scenes with horses and stables ….as it brought back memories and made me remember the scent of horses and hay and always hugging my horse and the stable being a place to go always just so relaxing and fun to spend time with them as horses are amazing friends. just listen to this book as you will be so happy you did.

fun read with great feminist story

I enjoyed reading this book. I had to listen to it at 1.2 times the speed because the narration was a bit slower. The story was good.

Sound varies

Although the story is good, the sound varies so much it’s either too loud or too soft to understand.

My favorite romance of all time!

Whenever I need to step away from the stressors in my life, I always read a romance with a HEA. I listen as I walk or I hide away for some quiet reflection. But, what I loved most about this article is the facts laced within it. The female lead as brilliant and the powerful but principled man! It has it all: interesting, intelligent, historical but most of all deeply felt love between this leads! I have read hundreds of historical romance novels. I’ve learned so much about historical topics that I never would have read about on their own but throw in “two halves of a whole” and I’m in! Buy it, read it, you won’t regret it!

Outstanding

I didn’t know this was a series so I read the third book first and then I finished reading this one, and I must say, I loved this book so much. The pace and development of the story was so thought out and brilliantly put together. I do wish the ending was better. I think it ended perfectly well for this book to have a sequel, I mean how can it not? And as always, we love character development. I’m obsessed. Looking forward to reading book 2 and 4!

Historic references

I have always enjoyed historic based fiction. This book is a healthy blend of both history and fiction.
