About this listen

Eighteen-year-old Tilly Breedlove's father has sold her into a form of modern day slavery on Luna - the Tranquility Harbor Mining Company, 240,000 miles from home. Family Trade and Loan, an unscrupulous company, is more than willing to take her on and exploit her talent. Forced to be an exotic dancer, she performs risqué shows for the filthy but filthy rich ore miners - a far cry from her classical and modern dance training. If she isn't resisting obscene advances from bearded "Prairie Dogs," she's fending off jealous head-liner acts who view her as a threat to their status - and when those jealous showgirls say "break a leg," they aim to cause it. The only reprieve she finds in this shop of horrors is a few close ward friends, a sympathetic dance coach, and Buddy Gunner Bell who just might become the love of her life. It’s just enough to stem her psychological meltdown.

Such an interesting story

This was such an interesting story. You can tell from the opening paragraphs that the writing style was special. The intro of the main character was poignant and compelling and I could not wait to dive into this story. I couldn't finish it though.

The narrator was a bad choice. There was no distinction between male or female characters or even between the narrator and the character's spoken words. It was just wrong. The voice was pleasant enough but she was just reading the story, not living it. This book deserved better.

Incredible world building

My word! This is so new and different! Little miss Sunshine really does shine in this! She is a total BA!! Despite all the hard core things that happen in this story she still manages to come out on top. I mean this is so new in world building. I've listened to tons of dystonia novels but this one is so so new and refreshing!! I couldn't get enough and boy does Chris Stevenson like his plot twists!! This is an amazing new author to me and Kelli Winkler did a beautiful job even in the toughest of parts!! I couldn't stop listening to this to see what else would happen in Tilly's world as it unfolded and new truths came to light! This truly is a hard book to review as so many secrets came out and I don't want to spoil anything for you! Check this book out

Great Modern SciFi Tale

The Girl They Sold to the Moon is written Chris Stevenson. This is a uniquely modern take that is very similar to the early Heinlein works of science fiction. In the story, American society has broken down and Parents can indenture their children on a loan for a six month period. If they do not pay the borrowed amount the children are now wards of FTLA and are the modern version of slaves. The Moon has been colonized, mined, and is a tourist destination for the rich. The Moon takes a great number of these wards (slaves) for the term of the loan.

The story does an excellent job of holding the listener's attention telling the story of the main character of Tilly Breedlove. Her plight is told from the beginning of being taken into the system and dehumanized by the FTLA. She is sold as a ward to the Tranquility Harbor Mining Company. Tilly will dance on the moon for the miners who are called Prairie Dogs, deal with other dancers, find some close friends, a mentor/coach, and a possible true love.

The narration is provided by Kelli Winkler. Ms. Winkler brought a strong skilled vocal quality to this audio production. This was the first time that I have heard a vocal performance from Kelli Winkler but I will now look for more audiobooks narrated by this talented performer. The production quality of this audiobook is also the highest quality. I heard no problems during the entire performance. There were not any detectable flaws that I was able to hear during the entire performance such as loops, breaks, or buzzing. The production was crisp and clear. Intrigue Publishing delivered an excellent audiobook production. I highly recommend this audiobook. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

YA Dystopia

There is a light scifi element to it. I would have liked more than what I got but it was ok. However, I did find it to be predictable.
I loved the fact that parents can loan their kids for money, which is a conscept that I have not come across in books before but it was intriguing. I think if some people have the chance in this day and age to do such a thing they would jump at the chance, so for me it is not far fetched scenario.
The book is about surviving, friendships and has a little romance.
However, I did find that I did not like the female character as the book progressed. It felt like she gave up when I expected her to fight back.
Even with this I still liked it and would read other books based on this world. I liked the idea and it was different.

Not as down and out as I thought it would be

This is the first book i have read/listened to by this author. This was a quite original story to me. I was anticipating a story with a bit more ‘at the end of the line’ and altercations between Tilley and the miners since it says she was forced to be an exotic dancer. I’m glad that it wasn’t. No, she does not want to be there, but she does make the best of it. She has some rivalry with another dancer and does need to avoid some advancements, but none of it is overly violent. She has some good moments too.

This is the first book I have listened to by this narrator ( Kelli Winkler ). She reads more than performs this book. Some sentences run together due to a lack of pauses. Here character voices are not overly distinct. Despite this, it is still a good listen. Her diction is good and I did enjoy listening to this book.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence. I don’t really recall swearing.

Interesting Dystopia

In this story, American society had digressed to the point where parents can “loan” their children for money for a short period of time. If that amount isn’t paid back, the children basically become slaves. The moon is a popular place for the slaves to be sent since it is a popular spot for rich people to frequent.

An interesting sci-fi/dystopia. The story deals with a lot of topics like friendships and what it truly means to stay yourself. I bounced back and forth about how I felt about the MC because I felt she was strong in places that didn’t call for it, and weak in the places where she needed to show strength.

Worldbuilding was done in an interesting manner. With a book like this, it had to be. Between the worldbuilding and the introduction of our MC, it’s easy to get reeled into the story.

Narration was crisp and very pleasing to listen to.
