About this listen
Now with a brand-new introduction to the world of New Arcadia, featuring Sam Riegel.
Experience the first book in the AudioFile Earphones Award-winning trilogy.
NEW ARCADIA: JUDGMENT DAY - STARRING ROBERT PATRICK - COMING JULY 2025
In a not-so-distant future, a deadly pandemic has forced the world into social isolation. Confined to their homes, millions now survive off drone-delivered food packages and online-only interactions.
It’s an especially lonely life for John Chambers, a drone shipment coordinator for the monolithic Chum Corporation. Trapped in his dead-end job, John has started spending much more of his time grinding in virtual reality role-playing games.
But when a corporate executive notices the hundreds of hours John’s logged online, he’s offered one last chance to save his job (and his life!). Instead of getting fired, John reluctantly agrees to become prime beta tester for Chum’s top-secret new real-as-life game, New Arcadia--a digital playground inspired by iconic '90s arcade games like Final Fight and Streets of Rage.
In New Arcadia, John gets to go back to a hyper-nostalgic 199X and do it right this time. Reborn as digital streetfighter Blaze, John starts cleaning up crime with his fists of fury while also building an online life for himself that seems so much more meaningful than the one he’d had in "real" life.
But John soon discovers there’s a darker and more ominous purpose behind the Chum Corporation’s new playground--and as he starts to make real friends in this virtual reality, he also begins to realize that what players do in New Arcadia could have dangerous, and potentially life-saving, implications for the real world.

Story
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Story
Vex and Vax have always been outsiders. A harsh childhood in the elite elven city of Syngorn quickly taught them not to rely on others. Now, freed from the expectations of their exacting father and the scornful eyes of Syngorn’s elves, the cunning hunter and the conning thief have made their own way in the world of Exandria. The twins have traveled far and experienced great hardship. But with the help of Vex’s quick wit and Vax’s quicker dagger, they’ve always kept ahead of trouble. Now, unknown perils await them in the bustling city of Westruun.

Story
Charlie and his friends enter the God Game, a video game run by underground hackers and controlled by a mysterious AI that believes it’s God. Through their phone screens and high-tech glasses, the teens’ realities blur with a virtual world of creeping vines, smoldering torches, runes, glyphs, gods, and mythical creatures. When they accomplish a mission, the game rewards them with expensive tech, revenge on high-school tormentors, and cash flowing from ATMs. Slaying a hydra and drawing a bloody pentagram as payment to a Greek god seem harmless at first. Fun even.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

Story
Our dream home. A fresh start. But the house comes with secrets — and so do the neighbours. The moment we moved in, I knew something was wrong. A cracked stove. Scribbles on the wall. The lights flicking off every evening — always at the same time. Our daughter crying in the night, pointing at the corner of her room. "She has no face." Now the gifts are arriving. Notes through the door. A bottle left in the kitchen with no explanation. And my daughter won't stop screaming in her sleep. Everyone thinks I'm imagining it. But I know what I saw. What I heard.

Story
Shaky is a sharp, soulful, and surprisingly romantic comedy about Nicole, a 30-year-old drummer whose wild-child lifestyle screeches to a halt after a shocking Young-Onset Parkinson’s diagnosis. Her plan? Keep partying, keep drumming, and pretend nothing’s changed. But when she crashes back into her childhood home—complete with her no-nonsense mom and painfully put-together younger sister—Nicole’s carefully constructed denial starts to unravel. As old tensions flare and new romantic sparks fly, she’s forced to confront the one thing she’s been avoiding: her future.

And he’s looking forward to his end-of-the-day drink and a soak in the hot tub. Then, a strange device turns up in his office. A piece of technology he has never seen before–and shouldn’t even exist. Suddenly, corpses start turning up, eco-activists go on the attack, random people suffer bizarre symptoms. And every time the authorities get a lead, it traces right back to Philip and his colleague, Celia Hunt.

Story
He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war. Fate touches him one chill winter’s day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery. This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth.

In 2018, Colton Haynes woke up in a hospital. He’d had two seizures, lost vision in one eye, almost ruptured a kidney, and been put on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Not yet thirty, he knew he had to take stock of his life and make some serious changes if he wanted to see his next birthday. It's rife wkth 90s nostalgia (and some 80s and 70s in some small ways). Everyone likes a good escape world. It's kinda like LitRPG yet managed to steer itself away from the genre enough where I didn't feel gross listening to it.
I kept appreciating the almost accurate bit-tune music. Not sure why a game about whaling was the top choice to start the story, but ok bro. You do you. (Why did Michael Jackson's "Will You Be There" have such a fixture hold in the whaling game? Free Willy, I know, but...that's...I mean...Willy wasn't being hunted for his blubber, right?)
Anyways, I'm coming off as critical but I really liked this book. Eager to hear the next! Left us on a cliffhanger anyways so I can't walk away. Well played.

I would like to find more books like these I really get into them and don’t want to stop listening.
The way they did the music and character voices it’s almost like watching it listening to a movie.
I would like to see more content in the next one. More depth on his job and the way he rights is not as detailed as I would like.
I will be listening to this book many times.
Thank you,
Josh
