Publisher's summary

For fans of Cassandra Clare's City of Bones and Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke & Bone, The Girl at Midnight is the story of a modern girl caught in an ancient war.

Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known.

Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act.

Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants...and how to take it.

But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.

Exceptional

The girl at midnight is even better the second time around. The level of foreshadowing, the world, the characters are all perfectly crafted. The reader also does an extraordinary job reading the story for you. Excited to relive the second book shortly, and finally get around to the third book later.

More Dragons Please

This was on sale, and because Miss Whelan is the narrator I automatically purchased since any of her work after 2014 has a deeper male voice, and this story has her lovely Irish lilt Brogue . Do not miss Karen Robards trilogy, guardian series as the hero Again has her lovely Irish lilt Brogue.
This story is noted as a young teen, and our heroin is 17 years old. HA!! This is fantasy at its best and our heroin is anything but a 17-year-old with young dialogue! The author takes from her personal background and experiences in travel and implemented them in this book. Creative writing that is entertaining if you like fantasy romance genre.

My Favourite Book

This is my favorite book of all time, as well as favorite book series. The main character, Echo, is someone I relate to heavily, from her past to how she acts now. She is extremely strong and inspiring. All the characters feel so real and I keep coming back to this book when im in need of comfort.

Old Story, And Still Magical!!!

I love this book. I love the strong female characters, the all too familiar struggle between status quo and progress, and the glimmer of hope that things can change when we all find a way to put aside our fears and bias.
I will keep this book in my library. It is truly a keeper. Now I am on to book 2!!! 5 STARS!!!!

The Girl at Midnight

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I can't wait to listen to the next books in the series. I like the character's in the book and the details. I also like the friendships / relationships of the characters.

Fun Fact: I had to start it at midnight because it has midnight in the name :D

It does take a while

It does take a while to get going, but it’s not painfully slow.
The narrator is fine, she just does not have the range to make male voices very distinctive, but I could follow who was speaking well enough.
I don’t think I will listen it again like I did other books (Dresden Files, The Grey Friar, The Tiffany Aching séries, etc), but I am glad I got it.

The Girl at Midnight

I started to read this book without any notion of the similarities other GR readers attached to it... I'm referring to The mortal Instruments series or Daughter of Smoke & Bone that I don't know at all so I enjoyed this story and this take of the author about mythology very much and even if there were parts of the dialogs a little bit over the top and the end was a little too easy I loved this story and characters. The writing was so poetic and the narrator's performance was excellent!

Loved the concept, characters and narrator. However it fell short for me.

So I love Julia Whelan and she did great as always. The characters began to develop and did so slowly but never fully reached their potential. The world and story could have brought so much depth but for some reason I felt like it was surface level with a potential for deeper meanings if that makes sense. I’m going to listen to the next book however , hoping that in that book it will pick up more. For this book I did. Like the ending, I just wished for more.
