Publisher's summary

Life played its horrible games with the girl. As she grew up she devised clever places to hide - inside and outside of her mind. She was tricked by her own illusions; she was caught in traps of her own creation. It began with a kidnapping, a locked room, and the broken doll that was more than a plaything…and always, in the shadows, the dangerous painting from her past waited, threatening to expose her.

Intelligent and dripping with emotions

This is a well thought out tale, dripping with emotions. I like the way the author leaves you somewhat baffled in the beginning, you see pieces of the puzzle, never the whole story. Then, when all gels together you are struck by the intensity of it all. I went back through it a second time, now fascinated by the clues that were laid out. To me, that's a mark of a good story, something intelligent that makes you want to revisit it again and again.

Seriously Creepy

I am not normally a big fan of horror short stories... mainly because they don't usually evoke any kind of emotional reaction from me. This, on the other hand, did. It was as creepy as all heck. The narrator's voice catches this content of this tale perfectly. I can highly recommend this piece by Dona and I am looking forward to hearing more from her in the future. Please note: I solicited and received a review copy of this work. However, the opinions expressed are my own and were not required or incentivized by the author or narrator.

Eerie and Unsettling

With this little piece of horror Dona Fox should be crowned the Queen of Creepy. Barbara Taylor has the perfect voice to narrate this eerie and unsettling story.

Very dark, but great!

Very dark subject matter here. Written from the perspective of a girl who's been through some nasty stuff and had to cope with it. Really well-written, and a moving piece. Dona Fox stories always paint a vivid picture in my mind. Very good narrator too!

Took me awhile

I'm not sure if it's me or the author but this is my second short story listen by them and I still walk away confused.
The basic plot is that there is a girl who was abused by her father then her uncle (so yay, trigger warning) but there's a neighbor who's an artist but looks like a child and a cousin but not a cousin and where did the title come from?
Yep confusing AF.

Entertaining

I found it a little difficult to follow this book at first , but by the end of it I understood exactly what was happening. It is well and well narrated. I didn’t find it scary. It made me think about it for a while after I finished listening to it.

A Different Kind of Horror

I am impressed by the different levels of horror this author is able to write about and bring together in these short pieces.

This short story doesn't involve the creepy crawly type of horror, but rather a horror of a different variety. At first things seems kind of bizarre; but the author feeds us piece by piece of the story and at the very end it all falls together so that you can see the full picture and magnitude of the situation. Fantastic for such a short piece. Definitely kept me thinking about it long after it was over.

The narrator did a really good job on this short piece.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

A different kind of horror

The author, Dona Fox, has a way of drawing her readers into a world filled with horror. In this story, the horror isn't a monster in the true horror sense, but still a monster that is actually worse than the supernatural kind.

A young girl is abused by first her father, then her uncle. The tale is told from her viewpoint and Ms. Fox really makes you feel all of the emotions in this short story. I would recommend that if a person has a history of abuse, this might not be the best story to read. But, if you love creepy tales that scare using your imagination, along with great writing, then give this short story a try.

The narrator was perfect for this story and added a lot to the creepiness of the story and to my enjoyment of it. I received a copy of this audiobook from the author, but chose to review it.
