About this listen
"I don't love this job anymore, but should I stay for the pension?" This gut-wrenching question is common for many people working in pensionable careers. But how much is your pension worth? And, is staying worth it?
Since 2017, Grumpus Maximus has researched and published material about this critical decision point, which he calls The Golden Albatross. Having served 20 years in the US Military, he, too, struggled with the same questions, and now he helps others learn from his mistakes.
If your job offers a pension, then this book is a must-have. Easily learn how to calculate your pension's objective value and weigh it against the subjective benefits of leaving for more fulfilling work. When done, you will agree, it was worth it.

In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - what percentage of the world's population live in poverty; why the world's population is increasing; how many girls finish school - we systematically get the answers wrong. In Factfulness, professor of international health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two longtime collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens.

Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Soon after he opened his vineyard for business many years ago, the Wealthy Gardener noticed a puzzling fact. Everyone wanted money, but only a few people managed to accumulate it. The reason, he realized, is that most people focus on short-term gains instead of achieving lasting wealth. As he grew old and aware of his dwindling time on this Earth, the Wealthy Gardener began to share his hard-earned wisdom with the financially troubled in his community, patiently mentoring those who asked for his practical advice on the ways of prosperity.

Great for those with Defined Pension Benefits
I enjoyed the author's perspective. Our careers followed similar paths which validated my own decisions. Those at the beginning or middle of a pensionable career would most benefit from this book in my opinion. The audio quality degraded towards the end of the book.
