About this listen

Jacob Reckless continues to travel the portal in his father's abandoned study. His name has continued to be famous on the other side of the mirror, as a finder of enchanted items and buried secrets. His family and friends, from his brother, Will, to the shape-shifting vixen Fox, are on a collision course as the two worlds become connected. Who is driving these two worlds together, and why is he always a step ahead?

This new force isn't limiting its influence to just Jacob's efforts - it has broadened the horizon within MirrorWorld. Jacob, Will, and Fox travel east and into the Russian folklore, to the land of the Baba Yaga, pursued by a new type of being that knows our world all too well.

This was a great edition to the Mirror-world novels... not my most favorite of Mrs. Funke's books (or series... I reserve that place for the Ink trilogy. ;) ) but still an exciting tale. one of the things I love most about her books is that when things get dark... they get REALLY dark... and even when you think things have GOT to be getting lighter, they get darker still. buy she mixes in just enough hope and love and wonder to balance the dark and keep readers wanting more. (and, I have to say, I LOVE the tiny nods she made to the Ink books in this story... made me so happy!)

Fairies and silver and mirrors and stone

Jayne Entwistle does a terrific job narrating The Golden Yarn! I wish she had narrated the first two books in the Reckless series, and sincerely hope she narrates the new ones to come!

Great Narration

I remember reading the first two books as a child and they have always fascinated me between the characters, the world, and especially the writing style. The way the worlds is described with small tidbits of exposition sprinkled in while the characters go about their business is incredible. It makes the world feel fleshed out and filled with life and more to explore, while not bogging the reader down with large exposition dumps.
I personally really enjoyed the change in narrators. It is jarring at first especially listening to them back to back like I did. But to me, I think this book focuses more on the romance side between Jacob and Fox instead of the adventure and exploration like the first two books did, and Jayne’s voice and style fits that. She also reads it in a way that adds the feeling of a fairy tale being read to you, which again really fits the book and setting. She gives the characters different accents that fit where they are located in the real world which is a cool addition.

Amazing story, interesting narrator change

I was really looking forward to this book and I was very disappointed that Elliot Hill did not narrator this book. The story is great but Elliot Hill gave the other two books and their characters so much life that this narrator was just not able to do. 😒

A bit disappointed

the old narrator was way better. you can't just change them midway, she gave everyone a French accent and made it difficult to listen and understand

Bring back the old narrator

I really enjoyed the book and didn't mind the change of narrators. The story is excellent and really gripping the whole way through.

A really good book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Golden Yarn to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, though I think I will.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Honestly, I love all the characters, so I can't choose a favourite. They all have so many facets to them, parts of their personalities that are revealed only as the Reckless stories continue. Certainly Fox ranks among the top.

What does Jayne Entwistle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accents; when I read a good book, I see a movie in my mind and I hear different voices, but I could never have done the accents.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Another world as you've never seen.

Any additional comments?

When I first learned that Eliot Hill would not be reading the third Reckless book, I was very disappointed. I had loved his reading, and didn't see how a women could do as well. Was I wrong -- Jane Entwistle was excellent, brought so much to the story, and I will definitely be looking for other audible books read by her.

Another excellent story from the mind of C.F.
