J T LeRoy
About this listen
The classic JT LeRoy story collection is now available in audio for the first time ever, featuring 11 previously uncollected stories, including one never before published, and an all-star line-up of 21 narrators.
“Beautifully structured and written.” (Hubert Selby, Jr., author of Last Exit to Brooklyn)
This book of interconnected stories depicts the chaotic life of a young boy on the run with his teenage mother. When Sarah reclaims Jeremiah from his foster parents, he finds himself catapulted into her world of motels and truck stops, exposed to the abusive, exploitative men she encounters. As he learns to survive in this harrowing environment, Jeremiah also learns to love his mother, even as she descends into drug-fueled madness. Told in spare, lyrical prose, rich with imagination and dark humor, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things transforms the savagery of Jeremiah’s world into an indelible experience of compassion.
Foreword written and read by Jeff Feuerzeig

Its throng of unforgettable characters includes academics and convicts, an American sportswriter, an elusive German novelist, and a teenage student and her widowed, mentally unstable father. Story
Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Discovering George Michael's Faith confirmed for David Crabb what every bully already knew: He was gay. What saved him from high school was finding a group of outlandish friends who reveled in being outsiders. David found himself enmeshed with misfits: wearing black, cutting class, staying out all night, drinking, tripping, chain-smoking, idolizing the Pet Shop Boys - and learning lessons about life and love along the way.

Story
In this unforgettable work of fiction, Donald Ray Pollock peers into the soul of a tough Midwestern American town to reveal the sad, stunted, but resilient lives of its residents. Spanning a period from the mid-'60s to the late '90s, the linked stories that comprise Knockemstiff feature a cast of recurring characters who are woebegone, baffled, and depraved - but irresistibly, undeniably real. Rendered in the American vernacular with vivid imagery and a wry, dark sense of humor, these thwarted and sometimes violent lives jump at the listener with inexorable force.

heartbreaking, eye opening
I read JT Leroy stuff when I was really young and felt seen. Going back to it now in audio form is comforting, homely. Most people who are 'normal' will find it absurd and evil, but for me, who lived a life similar to JT... It feels like going home.

definitely a must listen if you read it before!
I have read this book and watched the film several times. I was very excited to find that there was 3 hours of book left after what I knew as the ending. Although it doesn't really add much more to the story as a whole, it still is very satisfying that it goes on bc the original ending left you needing to know more. Now I do. I will say though, most of the readers are great but some are so different it messes with the flow and mood.

Stories amazing, narration meh
I loved these stories. Had heard about JT LeRoy for many years but hadn't read them, which now I regret. Such intensity and so raw. Listening to them first (instead of reading them) may have done them a bit of a disservice, because the performances were so-so. I'd say about half of them were good.
