About this listen

Some fly; some web sling. Some wield magic lassos; some throw magic hammers. Some work in the shadows; some operate in broad daylight. But whatever their powers and weapons and methods, there’s one thing comic-book superheroes have in common: They’re everywhere.

Why do characters like Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Batman, Black Panther, and Superman still draw our attention decades after their creation? Why are film and television audiences—not to mention legions of comic-book readers—still enamored with their stories?

In Lan Dong’s Audible Original, The History of the Superhero, examine the roots of the superhero dynamic that’s overtaking popular culture. Encompassing both Marvel Comics’ and DC Comics’ pantheon of extraordinary heroes, these eight lectures explore how superhero comics came to be, how famous characters (and their exploits) evolved in response to social and cultural changes, how superhero cinematic universes have become an integral (and highly lucrative) part of film history, and why superheroes of all types are likely here to stay.

Get ready for an exciting, eye-opening pop culture adventure. No disguise required.

Fun information, but unique narration.

I enjoyed the lectures, but it took me a while to get used to Ms. Dong's speaking cadence and word pronunciations.

Good introduction

This will be very informative to people who are familiar with the recent super hero movies but not their original sources. if you have a foundation in the comic books then this will be information you already know. I did still learn some new things though so overall it was a good listen.

Very robotic audiobook

While I normally enjoy the author to narrate their own audiobooks, I had several issues with this one.
1) Very robotic reading while little to no influx of tone - it honestly sounded like a robot reading the text. The author is a teacher, and I’m sure she wouldn’t lecture with so little enthusiasm… so it’s sad she couldn’t bring that to the audiobook.
2) Several mispronounced words and a couple mispronounced names. I know English is not the narrator’s native tongue, and her reading was perfectly clear and fine - but several mispronunciations stood out.
I’ve been a life-long comic book reader/collector/artist (yes, I’m old!)… so most all of the things in this book I already knew - but that doesn’t take anything away from the book… but I do feel that more info could’ve been dug up on some of the bigger “key” comic moments.

This is a good book for the average reader who is only familiar with superhero movies and would like to learn more about the books they are based on. I just think it would’ve been a better decision to have either a professional narrator for the audiobook, or have a director work with Lan Dong to better her narration skills to bring the reader in more with her narration.

A Quick Introduction to the Topic

This is a quick introduction to the superhero in American society. If you know much about the subject, this book will do no more than refresh your memory. It’s very basic material. But if you’re looking to give yourself a quick overview of the subject, it’s worth a read.

Interesting Listen

While it was a bit challenging for me to keep up with the back and forth timeline of dates, the overall information presented was very interesting. I certainly learned new facts about the history of comics, their rise to fame over the decades, Marvel vs DC, women characters, influencial people, etc. Although, I would recommend increasing the speed of the audio. Good listen!

Good introductory into the subject!

Very good introduction to the history of American comic heroes. Now I want to read more scholarly works on some specific topics she talked about.
Yes, the audiobook is narrated by the actual author, and she does have an accent, but it isn't so bad like some reviews have claimed.

Lacks some interest. Mythological heros’ are included

The audio was awful. Perhaps another narrator would have helped. Contemporary publishers are the majority.

Fun and informative

This course is so much fun that it didn’t feel academic at all. However, I learned an incredible amount of information about superheroes, and now I want to learn more!
