Publisher's summary

Author of the New York Times best-selling Mrs. Murphy mysteries, Rita Mae Brown delivers the goods with The Hunt Ball, the most entertaining entry yet in her popular foxhunting series. When a faculty member of the local prep school is murdered, the headmistress and "Sister" Jane Arnold, master of the foxhounds at Virginia's Jefferson Hunt Club, work together to uncover a killer. It seems the slaying may have been politically motivated, as students were demonstrating to call attention to the role of slavery in the school's past. With the annual hunt ball approaching, the 70-something Sister already has plenty on her plate. Does she have time to catch a murderer?

Critic reviews

"In Brown's fictive world, every fox, hound, horse, dog, and bird is given a name, personality, backstory, and dialogue. All can converse with each other and understand the humans, while Sister has the ability to sense what the animals are thinking. The hunt scenes are luminous." (Publishers Weekly)

I want to hunt with MRB MFH

These books are so fabulous and I absolutely love that RMB reads them for us! They are so rich in detail and fox hunting lore with great characters both new and old. Keep ‘Em coming!

very enjoyable

I Love Rita Mae Browns voice for these books. she is the perfect match for what i assume sister would sound like. having the author read her own book makes it that much more enjoyable.

Lovely Story

Rita Mae Brown is one of my favorite authors. She weaves her words into wonderful stories that keep the reader/listener begging for more.

That being said, though, I think the use of a professional voice artist may have served the book at bit better. Ms. Brown's voice and inflection sometimes are a bit jarring or stilted. Maybe this was the first time Ms. Brown has recorded one of her novels?

Listen and learn and enjoy this book!

I love Rita Mae Browns books! I learn as I enjoy the story. I usually can’t figure out who did the deed. She takes me into her Fox hunting world. Keep hunting but please keep writing!

Read, do not listen, to this book

This otherwise charming novel was totally ruined in the reading/listening. An avid mystery listener, I had to fight my way through Hunt Ball because the reader (the author) read the book in a monatone, paused at all the wrong places, and stumbled through every paragraph and chapter. What a disappointment. This book was so difficult to listen to it was almost painful. Strongly suggest that listeners stay away from this book.

Distracting Narration

This may be a good book; however, the narration was so bad that I was constantly distracted from the story. I wanted to grab the narrator and yell "quit pausing in all the wrong places!" It was the worst book I have ever read due to the poor narration.
