About this listen

The Complaints: that's the name given to the Internal Affairs department that seeks out dirty and compromised cops, the ones who've made deals with the devil. And sometimes, The Complaints must travel.

A major inquiry into a neighboring police force sees Malcolm Fox and his colleagues cast adrift, unsure of territory, protocol, or who they can trust. An entire station-house looks to have been compromised, but as Fox digs deeper, he finds the trail leads him back in time to the suicide of a prominent politician and activist. There are secrets buried in the past, and reputations on the line.

In his newest pulse-pounding thriller, Ian Rankin holds up a mirror to an age of fear and paranoia, and shows us something of our own lives reflected there.

Matthew Fox is a full service DI

This book had intricacy, well developed and believable characters, a plot spanning two time periods with ties to politics and danger. I only wish Matthew’s sister wasn’t such a whiny pain.

Good story and characters

Great narration adds a lot to a good story. I’d like to see more of Malcolm Fox and the “Complaints.”

It's Not a Popularity Contest

It's not fun being the guy who investigates bad cops. But Malcolm Fox has a job to do, and he isn't going to be put off by being stuck in a small closet for his interviews, or the time wasting delays put in his path. I like Fox. He keeps his focus is clear and uncomplicated. And I loved the narrator. Peter Forbes' many accents subtly change for each character. Just a pleasure to listen to, and definitely enhances the story.

intricate plot, full characterization

it's always good to hear a Scots accent when listening to an Ian Rankin novel.

Pretty good mystery by a great author

Not as compelling as the Rebus stories, but nonetheless interesting and well written. Good vocal performance as always by Peter Forbes.
