About this listen

In C.J. Washington’s riveting debut novel, a deadly secret and a devastating betrayal collide to unravel the lives of two couples in crisis.

Amanda Jackson and her husband Derrick long to have a baby. But Amanda’s meandering road to motherhood has strained her marriage and she finds herself keeping secrets, even from her mother and sister. Feeling adrift - and beset by the sense that she can’t trust her own mind - Amanda turns to neuroscientist Patrick Davis for answers.

Patrick understands the strange twists and turns of the human mind better than anyone. But his expertise hasn’t helped as his own homelife crumbles. Like Amanda, his brilliant wife Marissa is harboring secrets and an immense guilt. But instead of turning to Patrick, she becomes obsessed with finding a scientific theory to restore what she’s lost.

As the two couples confront the fraught intersection of hope and regret, what they find could change their lives forever.

Critic reviews

“Washington’s first novel is a brilliant portrait of human behavior, specifically how the mind evolves and devolves through time. This performance cements Washington as a powerful new force in fiction.”Booklist (starred review)

The Intangible is about a rare condition known as phantom pregnancy. This fascinating story had me spellbound from the start. Washington writes with great humanity, and I found myself rooting for his deftly crafted characters, who show just what it means to love and to long and to pick yourself up from the wreckage of a failed life to stagger on to something more. Inspirational and beautifully written, this is a story I will not soon forget.”—Suzanne Redfearn, #1 Amazon bestselling author of In an Instant

“In this excellent and emotional debut, C. J. Washington creates highly intriguing portraits of two grieving women: one dealing with a psychological condition that tricks her body into thinking she’s pregnant and the other hoping her brilliant math can find the string in the universe that will allow her to talk to the dead. Well grounded in research and full of twists, The Intangible is like the beautiful math equation it works to solve—complex, fascinating, with the answers to life’s impossible mysteries within reach.”—Julia Heaberlin, bestselling author of We Are All the Same in the Dark and Black-Eyed Susans

A tangled web of the impossible !

I struggle to give my 3 star rating. The ending finally gave some semblance of purpose. Way too much rambling before getting to something I could see a see somewhat of redemption in all those wordy chapters. My mistake in choosing the book.

Lots of turns

Lots of twists and turns with some laugh out loud moments that kept me guessing until the end. I didn't see that one coming.

The Intangible by C.J. Washington is a tragically heartbreaking story. It's not extra twisty or outrageous, just a novel where we observe real life between these four characters and their families. I thoroughly enjoyed it and almost every character had my sympathies at one point or another.

Jordan Cobb, Will Damron, Megan Tusing, and Andrew Eiden were all amazing narrators. I am appreciative that there were multiple narrators to tell this story as hearing from the different perspectives and timelines by one would have been too confusing.

oof

Wow I listened to the entire book because my wife told me it gets better. It never did and she was just punishing me because she had to read it. I am now considering a divorce because I would not make my worst enemies read this.
