About this listen

New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author Susanna Kearsley explores romance, court alliances, and the limits of one's duty in this rich story of an honorable man in service to a treacherous king, and the mission that brings him to love and his true calling.

It is the year 1613, and King James is sending his messenger Andrew Logan into Scotland with secret orders to arrest Sir David Moray, close friend and advisor of the late Prince Henry. Secrets are second nature to Andrew, who must hide his Second Sight to stay alive. Joined by a court scrivener and the scrivener's spirited daughter Phoebe, Andrew slowly untangles the true purpose of his mission—to frame Sir David for Prince Henry's murder. But Andrew is unwilling to betray an innocent man.

Phoebe Westaway dislikes Andrew, and their history makes it hard for her to trust him. But as their journey draws them deeper into the dark web of court intrigue, Phoebe begins to suspect that she might have more need of the King's Messenger and his unusual gifts than she could ever have foreseen.

Perfection

Fantastic writing, good characters with backstories that make you want to know more about them and a guarantee to lose yourself completely in the story. You can not go wrong with anything this author writes. Her attention to detail do not distract but enhance the story. Do not pass this by and after you read this one…..go get her other books asap

Better even than The Winter’s Sea

Bought the day it came on market…I’m a fan of Susanna’s books and Winter’s Sea til now has been my favorite… now it’s my second. I couldn’t stop listening without craving to go back to it. Love the 1600’s English and Scottish history merging seamlessly with plot.

Masterpiece

Every story I read from Susanna Kearsley pulls me in from beginning to end. The details, characters, and story are all very well written. I especially loved the author’s notes at the end. Narration was well done by both narrators.

Another fantastic read by Susanna Kearsley

Susanna Kearsley has become one of my favorite historic fiction writers. I love her attention to historic details and her well researched time periods. Her characters come to life and the story is captivating. This is the sixth one of her books I’ve read, and I’m looking forward to the next.

In the last section of the book she explains her characters and her research and sources, which I find greatly enriches my appreciation of the story.

Atmospheric

A unique perspective of royal history I have never thought of- the plight of being a messenger. I think I have all of Susanna Kearsley's books and she never disappoints! It took me a while to get into the multiple character voices, as I prefer one voice throughout, but the story itself was stellar. Be sure to listen to the notes at the end for a richer understanding of all the research she puts into her novels.

Beautiful Story. Easy Read. Perfect!

I saw this book on an Instagram page that I follow on Saturday 3/15, went to the bookstore that same day picked it up and had it finished in three days on 3/18. What a wonderful delightful historical fiction story. The narration was wonderful and very authentic. I fell in love with the characters instantly. It was a bit of magic, intrigue, romance, and adventure. I’d never read a book by this author before but now I’m going to venture into more of her books. Her style of writing and the way she speaks for the characters seems very genuine and very time appropriate. I’m so glad I saw this Instagram review. I loved it so so much. It really stuck with me. Wonderful. Thank you, Susanna Kearsley!

Great story to get lost in

I loved this. Such a good story, interesting, transporting, and entertaining. The narrators did a great job with the characters as well.

Poor narration

I have read almost all of Susanna Kearsley’s books. As usual, they are slow to develop, though the writing is very good. I am only 25% into the book so the story has not really developed yet, and this is not a review on the story, only on the narration should you decide between the book and audiobook. Keep to the book. The male narrator’s voice sounds too old for a young man in his late 20s. He also does a terrible rendition of the Scottish accent. He just tries too hard. The female voice just cannot do male voices.

Not what I expected

I’ve been highly anticipating this new book but found it to be slow and underwhelming. It felt like she had to throw in some sort of supernatural power so gave Andrew “the sight” that didn’t play much of a role in this story like it does in previous books. I enjoyed the characters but the entire story was predictable and disappointing.
