About this listen

1961. On a sweltering summer’s day, while her family picnics by the stream on their Suffolk farm, 16-year-old Laurel hides out in her childhood tree house, dreaming of the bright future she can’t wait to seize. But before the idyllic afternoon is over, Laurel will have witnessed a shocking crime that changes everything.

2011. Now a much-loved actress, Laurel finds herself overwhelmed by shades of the past. Haunted by memories and the mystery of what she saw that day, she returns to her family home and begins to piece together a tale of three strangers from vastly different worlds – Dorothy, Vivien and Jimmy – who are thrown together in wartime London and whose lives are fiercely and fatefully entwined.

Kate Morton has become my favorite author. This like all her others keeps you guessing right up to the end. Thus far she never disappoints

Can’t get enough

At first I thought this story was too dark. I decided to stick with it and it just got better and better! Loved the narrator as well as the story!

Unexpected twists and turns

This book started out very slow in my opinion. In fact, I almost stopped reading it a couple of times. However, once you get about 3/4 in it gets very interesting. At that point, it has surprise twist and turns, so hang in there!

Slow Start

What a wonderful story! I didn’t want it to end! Beautifully written with so many details of history. I could feel every shared moment in the book with all the emotions! Kate Morton‘s books are my absolute favorites! And now I am all caught up with all of her books. Highly recommend ALL of them! I will be checking constantly hoping for a new one to be released!

All was good to listen to and feel like a good story. Thank you Kate.

The language made it sound so real

The narrator for this audiobook did a fantastic job with voices, and I liked the unexpected twist at the end, but I found some of the characters unlikeable and wanted to speed the story up a little.

Good mystery

I enjoyed this book and its characters. Kate Morton brought everyone to life in a brilliant way - I can honestly say I liked them all, except Henry I suppose. The story was extremely engaging, especially the surprise ending - I didn’t see that coming (which is a sign of an excellent author). I highly recommend this book.

Excellent historical fiction

I’ve enjoyed two other novels by Kate Morton and have recommended her books to friends. This story stands out to me for the depth of each character. There is a background to them, dreams, good and bad choices, family histories and relationships that create who they are and how they respond to the world around them. I was entranced listening to their stories unfold and intertwine with each other. Wonderfully told and narrated with each character having their own voice and personality.

Character depth and story

It was long. But I’m not sure what could’ve been cut. It was a very good story so I tolerated the length.

The wonderful way the author ties the characters to historical events.
