About this listen

Some bury their secrets close to home, others scatter them to the wind and hope they land somewhere far away.

Judith Kratt inherited all the Kratt family had to offer - the pie safe, the copper clock, the murder that no one talks about - and she knows in her old bones that it's time to make an inventory of her household and its valuables. But she finds that cataloging the family belongings - as well as their misfortunes - won't contain her family's secrets, not when her wayward sister suddenly returns, determined to expose skeletons that the Kratts had hoped to take to their grave.

Interweaving the present with chilling flashbacks from one fateful evening in 1929, Judith pieces together the influence of her family on their small South Carolina cotton town, learning that the devastating effects of dark family secrets can last a lifetime and beyond.

My book club chose this book to discuss at our next meeting. I am so glad they did. I loved the story, the details and all the characters really came to life! Bernadette Dunbar did an excellent job as a narrator! I was sad when when I finished the book because I miss the characters. I miss their stories. I want more of their lives!

The storyline is heartfelt, like it comes from a persons soul. There are so many phrases that are drenched in reality…like I can totally imagine viewing the moment in this way. Thank you audible for introducing me to this new author and narrator.

A lovely story of family and the intertwining of familial drama. Love stories, murder, sibling rivalry all wrapped up into one book. I would recommend.

When I started listening, I wasn’t sure what to make of this book. As I continued, I discovered the author is very talented at hiding and revealing secrets coupled with characters that came alive to me. I cried at the end because of the truth revealed about life and also because I did not want to end my time with my new “family”. I wish I could tell the author how much I loved this book and how it moved me! I’m a Rosemary! Also kudos to the narrator for having such a wonderful way with making each voice unique and perfect! There are few narrators who have that skill to do male, female, and child voices that work! Y’all, read this book!

The book reads, almost as if an actual biography. A family of influence tied into a web of death, lies, and finding the truth after so many decades. Excellent character building. Easy to listen to. Make for a great road story.

Well written with many twists…
