About this listen

Five audiobooks and more than 20 hours of vampires, witches, and New Orleans Voodoo fill this complete urban fantasy boxset. Because you can't stake a heartless vampire.

Book 1: Bloody Hell

It had been almost a century and a half since I last encountered anyone from the Order of the Morning Dawn. They were religious fundamentalists with the dual goal of eliminating vampires and witches. Being both a vampire and a witch, I was the embodiment of everything the Order hates. Their first attempt to eliminate me failed. Thanks to the fact that my mentor in the craft was also a necromancer. When they burned my heart they didn’t kill me. They unwittingly completed a spell that tied my existence to the soul of one who took my place in hell. Now, I’m heartless, literally. Not having a heart has some advantages. It means I’m pretty resilient, especially when it comes to wooden stakes. So long as the soul bound to my existence remained in hell, I was virtually invincible. But, the Order figured it out. They hope to redeem the soul who was damned in my stead. If they do that, I’ll meet the true death for sure. I have to capture the one damned in my place before the Order manages to liberate him from perdition. If they free him, I will die. I have to go to bloody hell.

Also included are:

  • Book 2: Bloody Mad: A Vampire in an asylum? Like that's going to end well...
  • Book 3: Bloody Wicked: Taking on a horde of demon possessed vampires? Time to get wicked!
  • Book 4: Bloody Devils: We were the terrors of New Orleans. And humanity's only hope.
  • Book 5: Bloody Gods: I've always been the hunter...now I'm the hunted.

4.5 Stars - Great Boxed Set

Theophilus Monroe has done a great job with this series and I thoroughly enjoyed having all of the books together in one collection. Each book was filled with great character work and story lines. The Narrator did a fantastic job in breathing life into this series. I found this series to be just as fun to listen to as it was to read...maybe even more fun.

I received an ARC and Audiobook of this collection and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Mercy the Heartless Vampire

Mercy is a great character. She's complex and flawed. Her character grows throughout the series. There's a whole cast of supporting characters with their own interesting backstories.

I liked how this series of books crossed over with other series. The world building is in-depth and there's a lot to remember, but it's easy to follow as the characters figure things out about the origins and limitations of vampires, demons, druids, Fae, and shifters.

The books are full of adventure, betrayal, drama, and humor. Sometimes things get a bit dark, but I think that's fitting for a vampire series. Mercy tries to do the right thing, if not always for the right reasons, but she doesn't always succeed, and there are consequences for her choices. One of the things I like about her is she never shied away from that.

Kelley Hazen narrated the entire series, and the continuity was perfect. She did a fabulous job with all the different characters and narration.

What a ride!

The Legacy of a Vampire Witch is a cleverly written and well-crafted urban fantasy containing some dark elements. As soon as I started the first book, I was hooked; my attention was totally captured and held through the very end of the boxset. Theophilus Monroe is a talented author creating a fascinating world with colourful and multi-faceted characters. The series premise is unique, dark, and especially interesting. The storyline is rich, entertaining, and exciting, with enough surprising twists to keep you guessing and on the very edge of your seat. Mercy Brown is a competent, capable, strong, and clever vampire witch, a rare creature. At Nineteen-years of age, her destiny was forever altered when she contracted consumption. Desperate not to meet her deceased mother and sister's fates, and with the aid of her witch trainer, Moll, she agrees to become a vampire. Later, she faces numerous challenges and hindrances, including treachery, battling deadly supernatural creatures and forces, and so much more. I definitely enjoyed the ride!

Kelley Hazen did an excellent job with the narration, breathing life into the characters and making the story even more engaging. Legacy of a Vampire Witch series is a fantastic listen with no dull moments. I'm highly recommending the series.

Love Mercy Brown

Love the take on a Vampire witch who may turn into a queen or the antichrist! It's different. Love the appearance of other series characters like Annabelle and Cain. The only thing I don't absolutely love is Hailey, her character voice. The rest though I found thoroughly entertaining and because each series is stand alone you can read this before or after the other connected series. I enjoy that

Confusing at times but entertaining:)

I listened to all the books in the series separately and then re-listened as a box set - and I still liked it, which is the best recommendation for the series, I think:) But to give you a more detailed opinion, I'll partly cite myself - so here it is:

Book One - Bloody Hell
On the one hand, it was a really nice listen, one that kept me going on without much disappointment or irritation; on the other, I did not feel an urge to listen to the second part immediately after finishing the first... Two things killed the curiosity in me while listening: one, the vampire lore itself - the amount of information felt excessive and slowed the dynamics of the plot. Secondly, I felt rather indifferent to Mercy, the main heroine - I neither liked nor disliked her, her cruelty and mercilessness didn't move me at all, and she reminded me more of a naive child that hadn't yet been taught how to control emotions and impulses rather than a monster she's supposed (?) to be. But, the plot itself was quite interesting, some ideas will probably be developed later on (there's much potential there), also some of the secondary characters are very well written and the ending does make you want to find out what will happen next.

Book Two - Bloody Mad
Definitely better than book one. I still don't know if I like Mercy, but the whole bunch of new characters is an interesting and very well written crowd. Not only do they complicate Mercy's life but they also provide some really hillarious scenes, with the wacky kind of humour I like. The plot itself is fast, with Mercy locked up in an asylum, her psychiatrist trying to persuade her she is schizophrenic, and a new demonic danger in store for us, surely to be further developed in the following books. All this makes the book definitely more engaging than the previous one:)

Book Three - Bloody Wicked
The demonic possession of vampires is in full swing and Mercy seems to run against time. If she doesn't manage to figure out how to stop it, no-one will, and the world as she knows it will end. But the task is difficult as hell, and there are new enemies she has to face. Again, the plot is fast, there are quite a few nice twists and turns and the characters are fantastically written. It's definitely a character driven story, with quite a bit of sarcastic humour that adds life to it.

Book Four - Bloody Devils
In book four Mercy is still trying to figure out how to stop demons from possessing vampires, how to control her destiny, how to deal with Moll, and at the same time facing an even more challenging enemy. Legion - a demon being one in so many... The concept is not new, but it's very masterfully executed here, allowing Mercy and her weird sisters to show off a bit:) Again, characters are a definite strength of the book; they are complex, three-dimentional, real...

Book Five - Bloody Gods
The last book in the series, bringing the solution to everything that has been happening so far, is both satisfying and... disappointing. Satisfying in that all the threads, all subplots get their solution, all our questions are answered, all doubts explained. Disappointing in that it all kind of seems too simple; after looking for so long Mercy finds the solution almost by accident, and everything works out well with no big obstacles or mishaps on the way... But overall it's a very nice closure to Mercy's adventures.

The greatest strength of the whole series is the way characters are built and developed - they are full bodied, complex individuals, ambiguous at times, with secrets and hidden motifs... They surprise the readers now and again, they give us a headache sometimes when we try to guess the reasons behind their actions... This is what really kept me listening to the series:)

Narration by Ms Hazen is great throughout the series. She adds life to the books, the voices of individual characters match their personalities and the pace of her reading is OK. It's a great interpretation of the series.

And one more thing: with how the final book ends, there's room for some more of Mercy Brown and her friends for the future...:) And I wouldn't say NO to meeting them again...:)

Vamps!

I don’t know how the author does it, but Monroe has the most entertaining narrators who really suck you in to the story and get you feeling super involved! Vampire novels are pretty played out, but this one was different! Humor, drama, romance, action…plus vampires and voodoo! Ahem, you’ll also recognize some crossover characters if you’ve read/listened to Voodoo Legacy series (another one you won’t want to miss).

The Legacy of a Vampire Witch

I'm not typically a fan of horror, but I found this series entertaining. This five book collection follows Mercy Brown as she navigates her new existence as a witch who is also a vampire.

Theophilus Monroe does a great job of keeping the reader/listener engaged. His characters are well developed, the plot is interesting and cohesive across the 5 books, and I love the spattering of cultural references throughout.

An A+ performance by Kelley Hazen! Kelley gives each character their own voice that brings out their unique personalities. It amazes me how one person can provide so many diverse voices. I Love it!

A vampire witch- an epic mortal undead adventure

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated by the wickedly brilliant Kelley Hazen gives this already colorful series with intriguingly eccentric characters a deeper, realistic edge. Mercy already had a complicated life of a gifted witch living in 1892 and dying of consumption... or at least would have if not for her coven and a odd, mysterious vampire called Nico changes her life by turning Mercy into an immortal vampire witch. Through five books, Mercy learns to navigate the bizarre and beautifully confounding world of what it means to be a vampire: not an easy feat when the list of blood is a constant urge to fill. Then there's the obsessive group Order of the Rising Dawn and their desire to destroy vampires and witches alike. A fiery, witty journey, giving both witches and vampires a gritty, dark view that's wondrously memorable. Highly recommended.
