About this listen

For a woman obsessed and a killer in her shadow, remembering the past becomes a mind game in a novel of psychological suspense by New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton.

Twin sisters Marisa and Clare Stockton were sixteen when Clare’s body was found in Virginia’s James River. No arrests were made. Fourteen years later, Marisa’s friends and dedicated career as a photographer help her to cope with the open wound of the past. But Marisa still feels the hurt—and the unsolved murder isn’t the only thing haunting her.

A recent car crash has erased ten days of Marisa’s memories—a black hole leading up to the accident that’s left her disoriented. Every text and phone call from that crucial missing time has vanished, along with her phone. A photograph she took of the river has disappeared. A new neighbor Marisa believes she knows introduces himself as if he were a stranger. And there’s the growing fear that her near-fatal accident was no accident at all. As dreams of Clare and nightmares of the crash begin to converge, so do two disturbing puzzles fourteen years apart.

Putting the pieces together could be fatal. As she struggles to remember everything, Marisa closes in on a killer—without realizing that he’s already closed in on her.

Lies have a way of compounding

Marisa was the bad twin…but Clare was the one who was murdered when they were 16yo. Almost a decade later and Marissa, a recovering alcoholic, has not given up on finding her sister’s killer. Not everyone is supportive of Marissa’s determination and, as she uncovers numerous lies. her questions may lead to her own demise. Great murder mystery.

Great story, narration okay

The story was pretty good and kept you guessing! The narration was pretty hard to get thru but still kept listening. Overall liked it but recommend reading the book not audible.

Riveted into the end!

Mary Burton is one of my go-to authors and this is another reason why. This story had me guessing and developing theories from the beginning and that continued throughout the book. Great character development, intriguing story, and suspects abound. Definitely a must read.

Engaging, but a bit too obvious

It was good but it was kind of obvious though I didn't see the final twist and spent most of the listen guessing who was "him". Britt's narrator was obnoxious to me too unfortunately.

A many layered cold case

Marisa may have guilt from her identical twin sister, Clare's murder 14 years ago. The case is cold and will be put on the back burner after the lead detective retires. Marisa is now trying to stay sober and help solve the murder with the detective's notes. One thing is true that everyone lies. Will Marisa also die because she might be getting close to figuring out who the killer is? Great listen with the multivoiced recording.

Loved it!

As my first Mary Burton book I am extremely pleased. Hooked from the beginning, just let yourself fall into the characters and put yourself in their shoes. All the mystery of the story of why each were where they were, and filling in the blanks as you go. The ending was rewarding and quite fulfilling of perseverance sometimes pays off.

Evil loves evil!

I loved the navigating through each villain and exposing them. I know that at the end of the day the older sister is just as guilty, but I can’t prove it, lol.
