About this listen

James Pierson Beckwourth (1798-1866) was a fur trader and explorer born into slavery in Virginia. He moved to the West, and as a fur trapper, he lived with the Crow for years. He is credited with the discovery of Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the California Gold Rush era.

Great Story...most illiterate reader ever!!!!!!!

Fascinating life story of a remarkable person, place and time. Also, the most illiterate reader/narrator of all time. Sounds like a poor version of a free audio book from libri vox read by someone who is just learning how to read English.

Narrator is yelling at me!

The narration is a distraction away from the story. A good deep quality tone, but poor reading ability. Monotoned. Loud. Zero inflection. Skull pounding! Couldn't get through it. Think I'll buy the paperback.

Perhaps a better rest than a listen.

Quite a remarkable take of a lesser known American explorer. Perhaps reading this will suit you better than listening to it.

it could have been a great story

the narrator was hard to listen to and read the book at a frustrating pace. The vocabulary of the book was written at a level far beyond the theme of this story. I would like to believe that James Beckwourth lead a very exciting life and basically able to see into his adventures through these writings.

Incredible tale. Incredibly poor narration.

James Beckwourth lived a amazing life, anyone interested in the Wild West and the expansion of early settlers, Native Americans will love this tale. Please note that I would advise reading the book rather than listening as the narration is all but impossible to understand. Hopefully someday it will be reread in a manor worthy of the tale of Jim Beckwourth.

The narrator Rodney Louis Tompkins was awful

The story and writing were great aside from a few embellishments from the author. I realize the text is from long ago and I really liked the listen. However, the narrator was terrible. Often mispronouncing simple words such as “ask”. I overall liked the book and suggest listening if you can get over this

Wonderful performance

Narrator gave great authenticity to the voice of Beckwourth in this fascinating historical document. Thank you!

Narrator makes it impossible to enjoy.

this is one of the lesser known stories of mountain men but one that is full of unique adventures. well worth the read for anyone interested in that part of history.

However, this narrator is simply not good. His staccato cadence and improperly placed pauses make it impossible to follow. There is no flow. After 20 mins I quit trying to make it work.
