Publisher's summary

Tommy Carter was just minding his own business, taking out the trash from his job at a local bar and grill, when he noticed the man hiding behind the dumpster. He couldn’t get a good look at the guy, and the less he can find out about him, the more curious he becomes. He’d lived through difficult circumstances in his past, and decides if he can help, he will. Tommy doesn’t have a lot, but he has a heart of gold that won’t let him walk away from someone he knows needs a hand up.

Zane Martin was left wandering the streets of Sacramento in a haze after tragedy struck. He’s afraid to trust anyone and suffering from a lack of food and adequate clothing to keep him alive and well against the weather about to hit the area. He’s not sure he can trust Tommy, but he wants to. There has to be one good person out there, and maybe he’s just found him.

A story of helping when you can, and accepting help when it’s offered.

Tommy finds Zane behind a dumpster. He wants to help him. This was a great story about humanity and lengths we go to to help someone in need. Michael Wetherbee is a new to narrator, he did a fantastic job!

Finding Comfort

I love how loving and caring Tommy is from the beginning of the story. His boss is also caring. Zane's story is so tragic as we find out what has happened. This is a sweet story. I also love the epilogue. I listened to the audio and it was well done.

A Helping Hand Turns into Something More

The List by BL Maxwell was one of my favorite winter reads for 2019. It has a touching and warm message and Tommy and Zane are a beautiful couple. This was a story that I re-read repeatedly and I was excited to learn that it would be released as an audiobook in Summer 2020. Actually, all of BL Maxwell's books excite me so it should be a prediction that every future audiobook released by her will have me jumping for joy!

The List is narrated by Michael Wetherbee from Tommy's POV about his encounters with a homeless stranger, Zane. Tommy always sees Zane hiding behind a garbage bin whenever he takes the trash out of the restaurant he works at. Tommy's first encounter with Zane leads him to create a list of everything he needs to survive on the streets. Each chapter of the audiobook opens with an item from The List that Tommy is keeping for Zane. Zane's story is really sad and heartbreaking because it shows you how quickly a series of bad unfortunate events can lead to homelessness. Michael's voice has a soothing and calming pitch that sets the mood for the entire audiobook and takes you to Zane and Tommy's world. You can almost hear how brutal that first surprise snowfall thanks to Michael's voice and experience the appreciation and gratefulness that Zane has every time that Tommy brings him a meal or a clothing item from The List.

One of the most heartbreaking moments for me was when Zane disappeared for a while and Tommy kept searching for him. I was so pleased with Michael's narration of that particular scene because his voice did a really great job of highlighting the stress and anxiety Tommy felt when he couldn't find Zane. You can hear the panic in Tommy's voice when he kept driving around town looking for Zane and thinking about how the brutal affects of the weather. The relief when Tommy finds him made me tear up because you can just imagine that scene. Tommy and Zane are such a wonderfully sweet and endearing couple because they don't fall in love right away. It's a really slow build-up to that type of romance because Zane is simply trying to survive and Tommy is helping as much as he can.

The List is one of my favorite audio listens of the year because all my favorite characters are brought to life for the first time by Michael Wetherbee. This was the first time I ever heard anything by this narrator and I think his pitch, calm narration, and general tone sets a wonderful mood for The List. Michael Wetherbee did a phenomenal job bringing Zane, Tommy, John, and Bruce and other familiar characters home to me. Well done, Michael and BL, because now we all have another audiobook for 2020 to enjoy and listen to over and over again.

A helping hand!

This is one of my favorites by Bl Maxwell. This story really touched me and I loved the relationship between Tommy and Zane. Zane's story was utterly heartbreaking!
Michael Wetherbee is a new to me narrator, but I was quite pleased with the audio delivery and narration. His voice was soothing, unrushed and clear. A definite plus for me.

loved it

I loved this book. The narrator Michael Wetherbee really brings this story to life and makes you fall in love with the characters even more. Tommy was just doing his thing. Working and going to school. But one day he notices a man behind the dumpster at work. Tommy couldn't get a good look at him and knows very little about him. But he does know one thing he wants to help even though he has little himself. So Tommy starts a list of things he could get to help the man not knowing these random acts of kindness will bring them together. After tragedy strikes Zane is left on his own to fend for himself. He lost everything. So when a man named Tommy starts helping him he is leery. He wants to trust Tommy but can he? A wonderful story of kindness and love.
