About this listen

Among the tall grass, it waits.

A wooden chair sitting in the middle of a grassy field seems to call to a lonely, young girl. She wonders if the soft voice in her head is her imagination. What else could explain it? But as the voice pressures her to discuss a secret she only shared with one other person - a woman who recently passed away - she wonders if there is something more behind the presence of the lonely chair.

The Lonely Chair

Roma Gray is one of my go-to authors when I want a creepy, horror filled tale. From beginning to end, this story grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

April is mourning the death of her elderly friend, Miss Margaret, her only support against an abusive father. Her mother (supposedly) abandoned her to the horrible things that her father has inflicted on her. Now that Miss Margaret is gone, what atrocities await her? She finds a wooden chair from Miss Margaret's house, sitting on the hillside. As she sits on the chair, she wonders what will happen to her next?

The narrator did a great job and even though I had previously read the short story, her narration really brought it to life. Her performance made this disturbing story even creepier.

This is a short read, but one that will definitely stay with me for a long, long time. It is full of emotion, horror, redemption and wonderful descriptions. Ms. Gray has again written a short piece that is much larger than the number of pages. Definitely thought provoking and creepy and well worth the few minutes it takes you to read it.

sad listen

This was not a happy book. I wish there had been something in the description that mentioned that the secret was incest. The narration was done well.
I was given this free audiobook copy at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Well written and memorable

The Lonely Chair is a well written horror short story. Definitely sad, it takes some unusual turns and has a surprise ending (normal for Roma Gray). This is an memorable story with excellent narration.
