About this listen

A PROUD BEAUTY

When the tragic death of her gamester father leaves her destitute and alone, society beauty Sylvia Stafford finds work as a governess in a merchant's household in Cheapside. Isolated from the fashionable acquaintance of her youth, she resigns herself to lonely spinsterhood...until a mysterious visitor convinces her to temporarily return to her former life - and her former love.

A SCARRED BEAST

Colonel Sebastian Conrad is no longer the dashing cavalry officer Sylvia once fell in love with. Badly scarred during the Sepoy Rebellion, he has withdrawn to his estate in rural Hertfordshire where he lives in near complete seclusion. Brooding and tormented, he cares nothing for the earldom he has inherited - and even less for the faithless beauty who rejected him three years before.

A SECOND CHANCE

A week together in the remote Victorian countryside is the last thing either of them ever wanted. But when fate intervenes to reunite them, will a beastly earl and an impoverished beauty finally find their happily-ever-after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?

Endearing Story

I’m learning fast that I love Mimi’s writing. Her stories are enduring and beautiful. This was well written, the characters were enjoyable. The narration was amazing. This story reminded me much of my favorite novel Jane Eyre. I would highly recommend for a read of pure entertainment and a happy ending.

A charming romance

Tipped with trajedy and misunderstanding, Matthew's understanding of the Victorian era and compelling romance is enchanting.

Page Turning

An enjoyable read of a series of misunderstandings in Victorian Times. How life in their particular part of the world led to misguided thinking. I think it is a book worth reading if you enjoy Victorian romance. The writing is clear, the dialogue is excellent with strong characters.

Miss-communication

A delightful gem of a book beautifully narrated by Justine Eyre. This is the first novel I’ve read by Mimi Matthews and I’m definitely going to seek out more. It’s a wonderful tale of redemption and love.

Segundas oportunidades

Buenísima la narración, la historia no es nada nuevo pero Mimi tiene su encanto como escritora, entretenida y la pizca justa de momentos tiernos y drama.

A sweet, happily ever after story.

I loved this Victorian romance story by Mimi Matthews. The characters were endearing. There was humor. There was not an excess of misunderstanding between the two primary characters. The narrator, Justine Eyre, was excellent. The story itself was interesting enough to hold my attention. I recommend this book if you want to take a break from everyday worries and concerns and allow your mind to relax and enjoy something sweet.

Delightful

This is my second Mimi Matthews book. Both have been delightful reads - the kind of books that can really pull you out of a reading slump. This one is lighthearted, but still very atmospheric and endearing. Her romances are clean, but not prudish or weighed down by religion.

Absolutely charming!

Well written, full of romance, unrequited longing and finally love! This story was beautifully narrated by my favorite narrator Justine E and is an excellent example of society and the pitfalls of being a female in a long ago society that bartered women of noble birth for money and family status. Well done to the author!!
