About this listen

Critically acclaimed author Emma Otheguy joins Newbery Honor-winning Adam Gidwitz as coauthor of the newest adventure in the NYT best-selling Unicorn Rescue Society series as the kids travel to Cuba to help the legendary Madre de aguas.

In Cuba, it is believed that a mysterious water serpent - the Madre de aguas - is responsible for providing and protecting the fresh water of the island. But the serpent is missing, and a drought has gripped the island. Uchenna, Elliot, and Professor Fauna fly to Cuba and endeavor to rescue the Madre de aguas. Unfortunately, it tries to kill them. Meanwhile, the Schmoke Brothers' goons are driving around Havana, dumping pink sludge into the sewers. What is going on? Can Elliot and Uchenna end the drought? Stop the Schmokes? Or will the creature they are trying to save just eat them instead?

We love the series, and we were very excited to start a new adventure. However, the new narrator, Ms. Rebecca Soler, just didn't capture the same essence of all the characters, especially Professor Fauna. It felt the narration very rushed and gave little time to imagine the interactions. We have considered slowing the narrative down, but still, it's just not the same. I would be willing to purchase the book again if January LaVoy narrates.

What happened to January LaVoy?

The new narrator ruined it for my son. It’s just not the same when the characters changed.

Bad

This series gets more and more liberal with each book, adding in too many one sided views of politics. Other than that, the story is cute and well written.

Overall, a cute story for kids
