About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A daring art heist on the eve of Molly’s wedding reveals long-buried secrets in this intriguing and heartwarming novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maid and The Mystery Guest.

”A big-hearted examination of wealth and social class.”—Oprah Daily

”A glorious read . . . intrigue, heart, and humanity in spades.”—Lucy Foley

Molly Gray’s life is about to change in ways she could never have imagined. As the esteemed Head Maid and Special Events Manager of the Regency Grand Hotel, two good things are just around the corner—a taping of the hit antiquities TV show Hidden Treasures and, even more exciting, her wedding to Juan Manuel.

When Molly brings in some old trinkets to be appraised on the show, one item is revealed to be a rare and coveted artifact worth millions. Molly becomes a rags-to-riches sensation, and a media frenzy swirls as she prepares to sell her priceless treasure. Then, on auction day, the treasure suddenly vanishes, and Molly and her friends find themselves at the center of the boldest art heist in recent memory.

But the key to this mystery lies in the past, in a long-forgotten diary written by Molly’s Gran. For the first time ever, Molly learns about her grandmother’s secrets: how she was born into a wealthy family and fell head-over-heels in love with a young man her parents deemed below her. As fate would have it, Gran’s greatest love was someone Molly knows quite well.

A spirited heist caper and an epic love story, The Maid’s Secret is a spell-binding whodunit that will capture your heart.

Critic reviews

“Wonderful . . . The perfectly timed reveals in each story line complement each other, and Prose seamlessly integrates the tones of 1950s melodrama and zany contemporary caper. Energetic and full of heart, this proves that Prose’s series deserves a long run.”Publishers Weekly, starred review

I love this series! I enjoyed Molly’s journey and if it had to end I think this was a perfect ending.

In this book we get more of Molly’s Gran’s backstory and the characters change a lot through her telling of the past. I thought it was perfect but I am also one who can accept character change well assuming it is well written- which I think it was. Lauren Ambrose is such an excellent narrator and I think she’s one of the few actors who can take a great book and make it even better through her narration without straying from the page.

I’m so happy I read this, if you loved the other books this one will not disappoint!

Book is excellent, Lauren Ambrose’s performance was perfect

This may be the last of the series, as everything seemed pretty tidy at the end, but it is light and entertaining. With all the world's worries, listening to something where the main characters are good people is nice.

Molly the Maid is such a lovable character. I very much enjoy how the story came together. It was beautifully done.

I’ve read over 200 novels since I retired and Nita Prose character development is by far the most outstanding I have ever read. I felt like I knew each character personally, not only primary characters, but secondary ones as well.
Prose’s humor is relatable, and laugh out loud in some places. The dialog between characters is engaging and real. While this is a cozy novel, it is never cheesy or corny.

Gran's diary was a beautiful way to entangle a vintage love story that entwined with Molly’s life, and I savored the slow steady pace the plot moved forward.

The ending is remarkably satisfying for the love story, even though from previous books in The Maid series, I had a superficial look at what the outcome for the couple would be, the details were engaging and I could not stop listening.

Narration by Lauren Ambrose was absolute perfection, amazing how she could differentiate Molly's voice and Gran's in addition to a huge cast of unique characters.

This is a true mix of genre. The mystery tied in was simple, but not predictable. It was a satisfying storyline for the modern day characters, Molly and Juan, and a culmination of their own love story.

Beautifully written with vivid loveable characters

I love this short series about a quirky main character. It had many endearing characters in the storyline was really enjoyable and fun. It had some serious parts, but in the end, it was such a feel good story… I loved it!

Endearing, short series

I don’t know how she did but this cleverly written fourth installment about Molly the maid very well be my favorite!!! I think it was in part the way that Nita Prose makes you feel like you’re sitting in the same room as the characters, and also without giving too much away, the angle of the dear diary. Also. The narration. Hands down the best variety of voices! Absolutely loved it!

All of it.

I’ve really enjoyed this series, and this book especially. Nita Prose is such a wonderful writer, and she has such a unique signature style - it’s hard not to read them too fast.

Such a feel good book!

One of my favorite Molly the Maid stories. Impeccable narration (as always) by Lauren Ambrose.

Loved getting the full backstory of Gran

I came to care so strongly for the characters that this latest entry in the series brought peace to my heart. I know Molly will always be cared for and will survive. Earlier in the series the story line, writing and characterizations were so gripping/enthralling I would be unsettled and worried for the characters going through a tough time. I’m still angry about the injustices portrayed in the books. But isn’t this an example of great writing and a great story? That it sticks in one’s mind? Awesome.

This installment brings peace
