About this listen

"If it is beyond your power to control, let it go."

"Do not wish that all things will go well with you, but that you will go well with all things."

"In this way, you overcome life's challenges, rather than being overcome by them."

Epictetus (c. AD 50-135) was a former Roman slave (he was also lame in one leg, and walked with a crutch) who went on to become a great teacher. His philosophy, Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical - aimed at relieving human suffering here and now.

The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings and pithy sayings, compiled by one of his students. It is the most accessible and actionable guide to Stoic philosophy, as relevant today as it was in the Roman Empire.

This new edition, published by Ancient Renewal, is rendered in contemporary English by Sam Torode.

More than amazing

This book is able to concisely talk about personal and society'll things and concepts that should have been talked about at a younger age. And is like having a wise person talking about there life knowledge having experienced and learned it all. And while this book is only 40 mintues about it is a power punch of things you need to hear. 100000% recommend. thank you.

Good Daily Read

This book is more of a reflective on that you’ll get the most out of it if you review it daily repetitively. In order to practice some of the principals you may want to break them down and do a little further “research” to get the full scope.

Short and insightful.

Great purchase. Sometimes I fault a book for being too short, but not this one. I listen to it two or three times a week, no joke.

Quick and understandable!

I’ve been dreading reading Stoic works because I thought it would be impossible to understand. I really appreciated the translation and can easily apply the principles. I’m very grateful for having found this!

Worth the price and time

The performance was easy enough to attend, but sounded like it was being read. It lacked the inflection/emotion of a 5-star performance.

I'm not in love with the translation. I felt it missed some of the nuance of the original. That being said, there is still plenty of value to be found within. I do not at all regret the purchase or listening time.

solid modern translation, I own all three editions

I guess I really like this as I own it in paper, digital, and audiobook form, and in two editions and have also bought it for friends going through hardships. it's a solid modern translation and leaves out the archaic language of other versions.

Great modern version of the Ehchiridion

The simplicity of the language makes it easier to follow than a lot of the translations available online.
