Marcus Aurelius
"Live each day as if it were your last." Written in Greek by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, without any intention of publication, Marcus Aurelius's Meditations offers a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe.
Ranging from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the nature of moral virtue, human rationality, divine providence, and Marcus's own emotions. But while The Meditations was composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, in developing his beliefs Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection of extended meditations and short aphorisms that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers, and readers throughout the centuries.

Where other reviews complain of the use of “thee” and “thou”, I think it perfectly fits the tone of what is being said. This is an old writing, by an emperor, guiding us in life philosophy, I can’t imagine a better place for language that invokes an ancient aura.
I am spatially frugal about books, but I’m buying a physical copy immediately. I want to annotate and have a dialogue with the book, to pour over the words, look at differences in translations, and dig further into the ways one can interpret what Marcus Aurelius was truly feeling and aiming for.
I may continue rereading this book for the rest of my life. The pace of the writing can be drawn out, which is inherent to a private journal- you can watch his thoughts evolve and clarify as you go. I intend to write my own condensation of his points, so that I may have some little agnostic bible of Aurelius to keep around me and remind me of my virtues, reasons, and duties.
