This “complete” collection does not include every Discourse! 1.11 is one of the most fundamental, and it’s one of the ones missing.

“Complete” isn’t complete

I leave this audiobook playing in my headphones all day at work, and then all night when I go to bed. Rinse and repeat. The narrators voice is engaging and sounds like dialogue, as opposed to someone monotonously reading. My favorite parts were all of Seneca’s Letters, until I reached Epictetus’ Discourses: Epictetus leaves me mind blown every few paragraphs. My only complaint is that Marcus Aurelius Meditations uses archaic English, which can make it feel unrelatable and a little pretentious. For the Meditations, I just read it paperback.

All in all, this audiobook played on repeat is a good way to dye the mind with the Sage’s colors.

Stoic thought is hard to get through, prodigious amounts of repetition that can make for a real slog. The same concepts are gone over again and again: things like the fear of death and virtuous living are described repeatedly. There is a great deal of helpful advice in here however it's surrounded by a veritable mountain of words. My favorite part was the golden sayings of Epictetus and even that was hard to get through. I still gave it four stars because it's not a terrible translation and the narrator did a good job: it's really the Stoic philosophers with their infinite rambling that will lull you to sleep. Philosophy can be boring and virtue is anything but exciting, reflecting on death has its uses though.

Rambling discourses that can feel endless at times.

This book series is amazing. Never before have I felt such enlightenment by such seemingly simple questions.

I really enjoyed this narrator. He was clear and easy to understand and made the text really engaging. I would definitely listen to other texts from him again! This was especially helpful on texts like this that can be more difficult to understand.

Great narration!

I echo what the other reviews have said. As an aside, withstanding physical torture is often referred to in great detail. How luxurious to consider stoicism from the comfort of the modern first world.

This collection includes the major works thought to have contributed Stoic Philospher, beginning with The Meditations by Maruc Aurelius, On the Shortness of Life by Seneca, The Enchiridion & Discourses [Handbook] and Golden Sayings by Epictetus, and Lives of the Eminent Philosophers [Zeno, Ariston, Herillus, Dionysius, Cleanthes, Sphaerus, Chrysippus] Book VII by Diogenes Laertius. Unlike previous collections that I encountered, the first section begins with a lengthy introduction that provides some context to the work that follows (I would have appreciated a siilar effort for the others but was sadly disappointed). Some of these (Meditations and Lives) are available individually from Audible Plus catalog … also with decent narration, but having them all here in one place is pretty great. If you can tolerate the rather boring and bland style of these classics, this is an easy way to explore them.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
