About this listen

Between life and death there is a library.

When Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library, she has a chance to make things right. Up until now, her life has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change. The books in the Midnight Library enable Nora to live as if she had done things differently.

With the help of an old friend, she can now undo every one of her regrets as she tries to work out her perfect life. But things aren’t always what she imagined they’d be, and soon her choices place the library and herself in extreme danger. Before time runs out, she must answer the ultimate question: What is the best way to live?

The incredible lives of Nora Seed

Beautifully narrated by Carey Mulligan and sensitively written by Matt Haig I found myself travelling along with Nora on her journeys, understandings, dissolving regrets and growing love for her self. The Midnight Library held my attention as, although, it starts off with such loss and depression it always seems to give you the dangling carrot of hope, unexpected circumstances and I really liked Nora. I do not think there are many people who have not experienced these thoughts and emotions, whether they share them with others or not, whether they are fleeting for a few weeks or months after a major life crisis or whether depression stays with you for years; most human beings have experienced how Nora felt and because of this have empathy for her situation. It's a good book that never drags, it's well paced and you get just enough of her new life before she moves on. Carey Mulligan really breathed life into Nora and was a treat to listen too on audio despite the initial heavy subject matter it was a very good read/listen. This book will stay with me for a while as I sift through my thoughts on it and indeed, my own life and the possibilities ahead.

A bit cheesy, but great.

Needed this. The writing is easy (characters a bit flat and there are other literary foibles), but the story was absorbing and timely. To my surprise I got lost in it. Theme is a tad hokey (bourgeois angst and malaise) but it is exactly that of which my heart needed reminding. Despite my internal divisions, my enjoyment won out. Carrie Mulligan provided skilled narration - hoping to hear more of her on audible.

Loved this!

I didn’t want it to end! Laughed and cried my way through it - in two days! (Sorry housework...not sorry...no regrets!). Brilliant story - beautifully and thoughtfully read. Ordered a copy for my grandchildren.

Loved it!

I love this book. I’d love the idea of different lives. I found it gentle heartwarming. And it really made me think about being grateful. I love books that make me think. But just a bit 😀

My Therapist Recommended It

I loved the story, and the perspective it offers. listening to it vs reading it was recommended to me, because a lot of the protagonist's thoughts while fighting depression are the same as my own. My therapist said that listening to it is good because it doesn't enter my echo chamber, because it is in someone else's voice. The protagonist's personal growth is incredible!

My best read of the year!

This book is an easy read and a great escape. At the same time it makes you think. Life is what you make it! I enjoyed the audio version.

Started good - Finished weaker

I found it started with promise amd some intrigue but slowed down and became overtly "self-helpish."
