About this listen

In this atmospheric horror story, the city of the title is the ruin of a primordial site in the Arabian desert, thought to be more ancient than the first human civilization. In its heyday, the city flourished on the edge of the ocean. The inhabitants were a species of reptile looking like a hybrid of crocodile and seal, but with horns and protruding foreheads. They moved by crawling, so the remaining buildings have low ceilings. No life is evident on the surface, but the narrator - who might be an archaeologist - discovers that the reptilians survive in a manner of speaking, within a chamber deep within a vast subterranean cavern beneath the Nameless City. The chamber also contains hieroglyphs that reveal the city's history and the creatures’ hatred of mankind. The Nameless City is regarded by many as the first story of the Cthulhu Mythos, with references to the "mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred.

All Time Favorite Lovecraftian Short

This was the first short story by Lovecraft I ever read and nothing has been able to top it. The slow descend into the darkness of the mans fear and imagery of the surrounding city is unforgettable. The narrator articulates the initial hesitance and following madness perfectly.
