Publisher's summary

"Emily Pike Stewart’s narration brings the entire story to life. I sometimes had to remind myself that this wasn’t a great true crime or wilderness podcast, but a novel."The Berkshire Eagle

In this captivating novel of suspense from the USA Today bestselling author of These Silent Woods, a wilderness guide must team up with the man who ruined her life years ago when the friend who introduced them goes missing.

Emlyn doesn't let herself think about the past.

How she and her best friend, Janessa, barely speak anymore. How Tyler, the love of her life, left her half dead on the side of the road three years ago.

Her new life is simple and safe. She lives alone in her Airstream trailer and works as a fishing and hunting guide in scenic Idaho. Her closest friends are the community's makeshift reverend and a handsome Forest Service ranger who took her in at her lowest.

But when Tyler shows up with the news that Janessa is missing, Emlyn is propelled back into the world she worked so hard to forget. Janessa has become a social media star, documenting her #vanlife adventures with her rugged boyfriend. She hasn't posted lately, though, and when Emlyn realizes the most recent photo doesn't match up with its caption, she reluctantly joins Tyler to find her old friend. As the two trace Janessa's path through miles of wild country, Emlyn can't deny the chemistry still crackling between them. But the deeper they press into the wilderness, the more she begins to suspect that a darker truth lies in the woods—and that Janessa isn't the only one in danger.

Poignant, suspenseful, and unforgettable, Kimi Cunningham Grant's THE NATURE OF DISAPPEARING explores what it takes to start over—and the cost of letting the past pull you back in.

Critic reviews

“Electric and wise, The Nature of Disappearing is the most inspired thriller on my bookshelf. Grant absolutely nails the magnetic strength of a woman caught in a foreboding landscape. Like me, you'll fly through this novel and fall in love with Emlyn as she reckons with a lush, unforgiving wilderness and a past tangled with desire, loyalty, and lies.”–Amy Jo Burns, author of Shiner and Mercury

The Nature of Disappearing is like a mountain trail that turns and climbs and turns again. Kimi Cunningham Grant weaves a solid adventure about friendship and betrayal and hope amidst beautifully rendered western landscapes—all of it bracing as a mountain lake.”–Andrew J. Graff, author of Raft of Stars

"The Nature of Disappearing is, at its heart, a story about the relentless survival of the human spirit and inescapable connections. Through artful prose and dual timeline storytelling, Kimi Cunningham Grant reminds us that, sometimes, we have to get lost to find ourselves."–Hannah Morrissey, author of When I'm Dead

A great suspense with a bit of romance

I love Kimi Cunningham Grants prose and steady tension. And this was a great wilderness setting for a suspense.

Kimi is becoming an autobuy

The language is so vivid! I could easily picture the story in my mind and i could relate to Emlyn. The pacing is fantastic! I’m a fan of time jumps so i enjoyed how the past was woven with the present! I wish we got more of Varden! The narrator does great job!

Not quite as expected...

Kimi Cunningham Grant has a deep knowledge of the outdoors, offering readers beautifully detailed descriptions of nature and wilderness. These vivid depictions make it feel like you are tracking along with Emlyn and Tyler. However, I struggled to connect with Emelyn, the main character, finding the supporting characters more interesting and wishing for deeper insight into their lives.

Overall, it was a great read, especially if you love an atmospheric setting and nature/wilderness novels. I would classify it more as a slow burn suspense than a thriller.

I’ll ready anything by Grant!!

I started listening to this book when life was busy and hectic. There is a calm rhythm to this book that drew me in, and gave me a visceral sense of its setting and flow. It isn’t a big thriller, but it’s still really good and so many aspects of it are relatable from the “all-aspects-human” perspective. This was really good and now I have to find another good book to listen to. Wish me luck!

Love the Author

The story is captivating and I love how she tells E’s story slowly along the way.

All about wilderness survival

Disappointing since I felt her previous book “These Silent Woods” was one of the best books I’d read this year.
