About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water comes “an utter white-knuckle ride that took me into a heart of darkness” (Lucy Foley, author of The Paris Apartment).

“Addictive, thrilling, intoxicating.”—Lisa Jewell, author of None of This Is True

“The vacation home of dreams . . . or nightmares? What a ride—I tore through this nail-biting, pacey read.”—Sarah Pearse, author of The Retreat

Nina, still grieving from the loss of her father, discovers that she has inherited property in the British Virgin Islandsa vacation home she had no idea existed, until now. The house is extraordinary: state-of-the-art, all glass and marble. How did her sensible father come into enough money for this? Why did he keep it from her? And what else was he hiding?

Maria, once an ambitious medical student, is a nanny for the super-rich. The money’s better, and so are the destinations where her work takes her. Just one more gig, and she’ll be set. Finally, she’ll be secure. But when her wards never show, Maria begins to make herself at home, spending her days luxuriating by the pool and in the sauna. There’s just one rule: Don’t go in the basement. That room is off-limits. But her curiosity might just get the better of her. And soon, she’ll wish her only worry was not getting paid.

Critic reviews

“A summer thriller that will keep you from looking at your own reflection for days, Look In the Mirror is a nail-biting page turner. . . . Will keep readers glued.”HuffPo

“Hypnotic and pulse-pounding, Look in the Mirror is both a dazzling puzzle-box of a thriller and an evocative exploration of trust, power, and how well we really know the people we love. I flew through its lush prose and intricate plot in 24 hours flat—and didn’t want it to end!”—Andrea Bartz, New York Times bestselling author of The Spare Room and We Were Never Here

“An inheritance puzzle turns sinister in this beguiling, atmospheric mystery. . . . A seductive, expertly plotted page-turner that will give you the shivers.”—Louise Candlish, bestselling author of The Only Suspect

Crazy unpredictable twists

I always love a Catherine Steadman novel and narration. You know that she is reading it exactly as it is meant to be read and it is always impeccable. I’ve never been disappointed by a storyline and this novel does not disappoint! Twists that you never see coming even until the very last page! I was hooked and listened in a matter of hours. Loved it!

Haunted House Story?

I've read or listened to most of Steadman's novels and have enjoyed them. This particular novel was, in my opinion, strange and left me wondering what was going on. It would be interesting to what gave the author the inspriation to write this "story." Nevertheless, I will look forward to her next work.

Bingeable!

Great story, awesome narrator, kept me going and I finished in a day! It’s been getting more and more difficult to find an audiobook that has a fun, thrilling story that catches my attention and holds it, and also has a great narrator. This one has it all. It may not be the most unique story, but it was a fun read!

Quirky!

This book did not take the path I predicted. I love Catherine’s books so I was eager to dive in. Story moves along and not your usual summer read!

Sitting at my desk with my jaw agape

I’ve loved all of Catherine Steadman’s novels but this one absolutely KILLED. I usually listen to audiobooks while doing art or mindless tasks at work but I couldn’t focus on anything but the book! This book had me theorizing, speculating, doubting and worrying - at one point I think I was just staring into blank space while I listened. I felt for the characters. I rooted for some, was suspicious of others. Totally fooled by some. Everything I want and expect in a thriller/mystery and more!!!

I couldn’t stop listening

Truly a spectacular, unpredictable thriller and I couldn’t put it down. This was as exciting as the first one of hers I was spellbound to “Something in the water”. One surprise after another that kept me completely engaged!

Colombia is not in Central America

I always enjoy Catherine Steadman’s books, but I am removing a star for her and her editor’s ignorance of basic geography. I found it really hard to get past the repeated descriptions of the protagonist’s heritage as “Central American” given that she has roots in Colombia, which is in South America. Doesn’t this book have an editor??

Un-put-downable!!!

I eagerly anticipated the release of this novel, and was not disappointed! I devoured it in a day and a half, as I literally could not stop listening. Catherine Steadman is a highly intelligent, creative, clever writer and just when you think you know what happens next…you don’t. Bravo!!!

Different!

This story is a little different from the other psychological nail-biters. There are good cliff hangers which make it hard to stop listening. Great voice actor, too.
