About this listen

“[A] wonderful novel.... Waters is almost Dickensian in her wealth of description and depth of character.” (Chicago Tribune)

Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners - three women and a young man with a past - whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise, and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

A Captivating Tale of Resilience and War

As a devoted fan of Sarah Waters, having read and loved four of her previous works, "The Night Watch" was a highly anticipated addition to my collection. While it may not be my personal favorite among her enchanting novels, it is undeniably a compelling and thought-provoking read.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, "The Night Watch" delves into the lives of four main characters, showcasing the profound impact of war on their individual journeys. Waters' meticulous attention to detail allows readers to vividly imagine the struggles and hardships faced by real people during this tumultuous time.

Though the book may lack the intricate and intricate plots that are characteristic of Waters' other works, it makes up for it with its exploration of the human spirit and resilience. The story revolves around the lives of the main characters, and their interconnectedness adds depth and complexity to the narrative. The emotional depth and growth of these characters, as they navigate through the challenges of war, are truly captivating.

Waters' writing style, as always, is impeccable. Her ability to create a rich and immersive atmosphere is evident throughout the book. The historical setting is brought to life with vivid descriptions and a keen sense of authenticity.

While "The Night Watch" may not rank as my top favorite among Sarah Waters' works, it is still a remarkable testament to her storytelling prowess. Despite the absence of intricate plots, the book shines in its portrayal of the human experience amidst the ravages of war.

“The Night Watch" is a must-read for fans of Sarah Waters and those interested in historical fiction. It may not be my personal favorite, but it remains a compelling and evocative novel that explores the enduring effects of war on individuals. Sarah Waters continues to deliver enthralling stories, and "The Night Watch" is no exception.

Also Juanita McMahon's narration in "The Night Watch" is simply amazing. Her ability to bring the characters to life and convey their emotions is remarkable. McMahon's voice is captivating and her performance is truly immersive. If you're looking for an audiobook that will keep you hooked from beginning to end, McMahon's narration in "The Night Watch" is an absolute must-listen.

slow moving without a satisfying conclusion

I didn't care much for this story. As usual, Sarah Waters writes beautifully, but the plot line was slow moving and the ending was not the payoff I was expecting. I really enjoyed the other novels of hers I read/listened too, The Little Stranger and The Paying Guests. I would recommend those over this novel.

Good romance during wartime Britton

Good story, a little confusing till you get the hang of the reverse chronological storylines. Very detailed description of the streets of the London, made me feel like I had lived there myself. Excellent performance!

Interesting way to tell a story.

I really enjoyed the way that the story was structured. I have listed to every Sarah Waters book on audible and have really enjoyed them. This one was no different. Can not recommend enough. It's worth your time. I don't want to give anything away, but the way the author weaves the connections of the characters is nothing short of masterful. The performance is engaging and really pulls you into the story.

Absolutely FANTASTIC!

This was my favorite of Sarah Waters books so far. I loved the story line and the multifaceted characters were superb. Her description of events made me feel like I was there and I knew her characters personally. I was so sad when it ended that I’m going to start it again. It was perfect!

Sloooooow developing

Interesting story. Moving from current day to prequel to pre-prequel was innovative. But really slow and boring much of the time.
