About this listen

"All the women of my family had gone to war... Now my turn had come... So, it is the custom that a free woman leave her mother's house to bind herself and those of her blood to a neighboring clan, either by the sword or by the cradle."

So begins the story of young Tamras, as she embarks on her journey to become a warrior's apprentice. This epic story is not about battles and armor, but rather about relationships, coming of age and wisdom, and deep insights into the human experience.

Francisco

Great story narrated with a rich and clear voice. Book 1 only is not enough. Looking forward for more.

Great experience

This was my first audiobook, I enjoyed it. The story is rich with well developed characters. I can’t wait to see what happens to them. Great story telling within the story. Janis Ian does a great of reading and singing.

Better With Janis Ian's Voice

(above the asterisk is my review from April 2012 of the Kindle version.)
In ancient days, when womyn* were warriors...

Why would womyn be warriors? Who but the life bringers would care? Who but womyn would be cautious about taking the life of a family member of another home.

Yes, there are men in the book. They have redeeming ways. But this story is about womyn. In particular, a young teen and her strange warrior.

Many subplot lines kept this book moving. There are questions to ponder, such as the difference between a secure upbringing and an orphaned life.

The most interesting thought is about anger and its purpose. Then there is jealousy and love versus friendship.

I can't wait till payday so I can get the next book in the series. For those who don't care for series, the first book does a nice stand-alone. Nice settling ending. But I love to watch the characters mature and learn as they do.

* my spelling, not the author's.

I just finished listening to the audible version of this book. I stick with the above critic of the Kindle version. I think having Janis Ian's narration made this a more enjoyable experience. Now I need to find the next in the series to listen to.

Love the series, beautiful performance!

I own and have reread the book series multiple times, one of my favorites! I wish the rest of the series was available in audiobook so that I could listen to them multiple times as well!

Amazing, Excellent, Addictive!!!

Any additional comments?

I gladly purchased book II & III before I finished book I…YES the story is “that” good, and I feel no resentment paying for the additional volumes. The story is thoughtful, adventurous, emotional, and exciting. The writing is smart, relatable, and easy to follow. I felt everything the storyteller was feeling, what an amazing writer who can consistently lead her audience to feel so deeply. I am honored to support the author who labored to create such a fantastic story. Catherine M. Wilson successfully created a wonderfully entertaining story. After completing book III I find myself missing the characters as I would miss good friends. A story that invokes such an emotional response is indeed, very well written. Normally I don’t re-read books; I will make an exception and look forward to experiencing these books again and again!

First audio book I could tolerate

I once tried to listen to the audio version of the Belgariad. The reader gave Aunt Pol a voice I could not stand and portrayed her as someone my mind could not see. So I had credits with Audible and used one to get this book. I've read the books many times and had faith that Ms Ian would not let me down. Janis Ian's character portrayal was wonderful. I easily pictured everything in my head as her voice guided me along. I hope that some day the other two books will be done, too. Catherine Wilson's When Women Were Warrior's series is one of the reasons I am a writer myself. If you've not read/listened to them, you are missing out on a grand tale.

Well worth the time to listen...

Catherine M. Wilson has written a story that is deeply engaging. On many levels, this book entertains, yet serves to provide moments of introspection for those who's life lens is shaped to see beyond the obvious.
Janis Ian, a songwriters songwriter, delivers a beautiful story telling.
I look forward to more stories in this series.
Thank you
