Publisher's summary

A trio of vicious World War One veterans descend on the farm in the Adirondack mountains where one of them grew up and his father now lives alone. They embark on, happily wreaking drunken havoc at the old man's place and in the nearby town. But when a naïve, mail-order bride arrives, she ignites a tinderbox of resentment, lust, and betrayal among the men that explodes in brutal depravity, bloody violence, and shocking death.

This hard-boiled, literary masterpiece includes a new introduction by Jack Mearns, author of John Sanford: An Annotated Bibliography.

Previously published as The Hard Guys and filmed as the 1971 motion picture My Old Man's Place.

Gruesome

I love John Sanford's descriptive writing, rich character development, and captivating story lines. This story though was too gruesome for me, at this moment in my life.

Sanford Excels

Great new storyline and characters. Exciting and surprising twists. Finished in two listens. Just ordered book two and am anxious for book three.

slow- then abruptly done

Never really understood the kids reasoning for hating dad, or why it took so long to move the story along. Unbelievable change in attitude of major character, Critical event, kid changes his mind about dad, falls on sword, the end.
Love Sanford, hated this book.

Didn’t believe John Sanford wrote this

Violent and reminded me of people I have known living in small towns and the south in the 70s. Only book of his that I didn’t like
