About this listen

To save the lives of her friends, Rachel did the unthinkable: she willingly trafficked in forbidden demon magic. And now her sins are coming home to haunt her.

As Rachel searches for the truth behind a terrifying murder, an even greater menace threatens, for the demon Algaliarept will stop at nothing to claim her, and the discovery of a shocking family secret throws Rachel's entire life into question. If she is ever to live free, Rachel must first walk willingly into the demonic ever-after in search of long-lost ancient knowledge.

But when you dance with demons, you lay your soul on the line...and there are some lines that should never be crossed.

Great Story...bad narration

I look forward to this series of books and buy as soon as they come out.And as always the story is great...but the narration seemed to kill every characters personality and all but ruined the story.would be willing to re-buy if they had original narrator rerecord it.

good book, not so good reader

I love this series and I think Gigi Bermingham is a good reader UNTIL she does different accents. Her Jenks sounds like Alvin the Chipmunk on amphetamines, the master vampire sounds like a little old lady from Brooklyn and her Al (the demon) like Miss Marple trying to do a funny caricature of the Queen... If she were to be the reader for the next book, I would opt for the print version. Most of the character accents I can bear, but I cringe when Jenks comes in and need to turn the audio down...
Kim Harrison is a fantastic writer and I do love this series...

Always check the narrator

This is the second time this year that I have been burned by a change in narrator, and oh! this is the worst by far. I know you have all read this over and over again, but it bears repeating. Gigi needs to learn how to read! Some pronunciations are just obvious. Sometimes I wondered if she didn't just do it to be different from Marguerite. I didn't really hate her portrayal of Rachel, but everyone else is just awful. I swear, in one scene, Algaliarept had 3 different British accents. And her Ivy was God-awful. I hated Gigi's Ivy. I am actually not finished listening to it yet, but it had to be said. ALWAYS CHECK THE NARRATOR!

Has This Narrator Even Ever Heard of This Series

I cannot believe that someone who was asked to narrate a book that is part of a series would so totally ignore the previous narrator's work and go off on her own. If she had listened to the last book, she would know how to pronounce names correctly and how to develop the correct characterization with her voice. This book is painful to listen to. I think I will just get the book and read it, because then I can just hear Gavin in my own head. By the way, I believe someone listened to all these awful reviews of the new narrator, because Gavin is back on books 8 and 9. Thank you!

What they say is true

Why a new publisher would not hire the same narrator for this book as for the last five can only be explained as a money issue, but the fact they did no research or the narrator did not research as to how the previous reader did the series is pure laziness. It's not that Gigi is a bad reader, she's just cut out for more of a dime store romance or gossipy book than for this. The former reader gave Rachel a gumshoe feel as opposed to a ditsy witch who's just lucky feel. She had a little Sam Spade to her and kept the romance or sex parts from being cheap or giddy. This reading makes Rachel seem dumber for some reason. And the voice of Janks is oh so wrong. Why did they not have the author coach Gigi in the reading? Tell how to pronounce the names? That is really distracting!!!!! As soon as I try and forget it's a new less effective reader, she says a name incorrectly and I'm back to focusing on the narrator's folly instead of the story. Whom ever edited this book should be turned into a rat for a month. It's a shoddy production which is not completely the reader's fault. Though she should have listened to the earlier recordings as well to assure she did a better performance.
Otherwise, the story isn't as strong as some in the past, but as always you find yourself completely engaged. You do get tired of some of the repeat descriptions like Jank's Peter Pan pose, but you take it in as part of whole Paranormal Gumshoe genre and it's not too big a deal. I love the stories, but I have to agree with everyone that this reading really frustrates us Rachel Morgan Veterans.

listen to the sample and then decide!

I didn't mind the narrator so much. She's different and aside from her choice of pronunciation for "takata" - I mean, toccata seems to be the obvious choice for that, since he IS a musician - I didn't mind the difference. I listened to the sample first before purchasing, just to make sure the narration wouldn't drive me batty, and it didn't. I would recommend doing so, because the story itself is as entertaining as the rest of the series.

Very disappointed

I have been a member for a number of years and listened to a lot of books. And yes the narrator plays a big part in how well I will like the book some were good and some not so good. I listened to the previous Rachel Morgan series and could not wait until I got this book. The least the new narrator could have done was to listen to the other books if nothing else but to know how to pronounce the characters names and the pitch of their voice. In the previous books the hair on the back of my neck would stand every time Ivy said a word now I barely notice when she says something. Now I shudder when Jenks speaks because he sounds like someone is standing on his toes. It sounds like she is reading the book. I could have done that myself.
I am so disappointed but the story is good as the previous books so when Kim Harrison writes another book I will get it and hope the narration is tolerable.

narrator

Having heard the entire series it was difficult for me to get used to a new narrator. She was good but IVY and Jinx had such specific voices in the past. The change distracted me. Still a good story.
