About this listen

The extraordinary story of Stefania Podgorska, a Polish teenager who chose bravery and humanity by hiding 13 Jews in her attic during WWII - from number one New York Times best-selling author Sharon Cameron.

One knock at the door, and Stefania has a choice to make....

It is 1943, and for four years, 16-year-old Stefania has been working for the Diamant family in their grocery store in Przemsyl, Poland, singing her way into their lives and hearts. She has even made a promise to one of their sons, Izio - a betrothal they must keep secret since she is Catholic and the Diamants are Jewish.

But everything changes when the German army invades Przemsyl. The Diamants are forced into the ghetto, and Stefania is alone in an occupied city, the only one left to care for Helena, her six-year-old sister. And then comes the knock at the door. Izio's brother Max has jumped from the train headed to a death camp. Stefania and Helena make the extraordinary decision to hide Max, and eventually 12 more Jews. Then they must wait, every day, for the next knock at the door, the one that will mean death. When the knock finally comes, it is two Nazi officers, requisitioning Stefania's house for the German army.

With two Nazis below, 13 hidden Jews above, and a little sister by her side, Stefania has one more excruciating choice to make.

Also includes a recorded conversation with author Sharon Cameron and reader Beata Poźniak, discussing Beata's decades long friendship with Stefania Podgórska and the legacy of the Podgórska sisters.

The narrator is difficult to listen to at first. The accent and inflection of her voice felt over the top exaggerated. I’m not sure if I got use to it or if her reading of the book mellowed but I didn’t notice it after awhile.

The story itself is one of immense courage. It truly touched my soul.

Loved the book!

I could not stop listening to this book. It is such an inspiration of courage during such a horrible time. I love that it is as historically accurate as it can be, and I cannot wait to do more research on this story.I highly recommend this book to everyone!

This book is one of my all time favorites! The narrator does a wonderful job sounding exactly as I would imagine the main character would
The story of courage, pain, loss and never giving up is also one of great hope! It is a must read and the ending is the best part!!!! I hated foe the book to end.it was as if I were saying goodbye to a dear friend

Interesting, gripping, horribly believable. Cameron did her homework researching the topic and I fell in love with the protagonists.

you won't be disappointed.

The story was wonderful, Sharon describes and writes the characters masterfully and Beata does a phenomenal job reading. I kept wanting to cheat and ask Alexa when the war ended so I’d know how much more these unfortunate people had to endure. I am so grateful that there are people with the courage to stand up and do what Stefania did. I’m not sure I could. Well worth the listen!!!

WOW-so worth the time!!!

I've read or heard a lot of stories about this part of history but had never heard this one. it was enthralling, captivating, tragic but most of all demonstrated the courage and tenacity of two young girls. I am haunted and amazed by this story.

What a story!

Such a well told true story from what this girl/woman went thru growing up. Getting close to the end I thought everything was so loom and gloom but turned out for the best. Don’t stop at the end and listen to the epilogue. The narrator really speaks this way which made it all so real. Loved it
