Publisher's summary

Son to a drug-dependent, single-parent, work-from-home prostitute, 11-year-old Ryan defends his mother from abusive clients and tackles ridicule from schoolyard bullies. Seeking solace in time-lost literature, he becomes a pained poet before he has learnt how to play.

Kim does the best she can to raise him, but with little means to support herself, her boy, and her spiraling drug addiction, she struggles to even keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. Darren, a particularly abusive client, is making their life a living Hell too.

Then Kim meets Byron, a similarly lost soul, seeking any kind of human connection even if he must pay for the company. Kim and Byron form an unlikely union, with Ryan in the trio forming something of an oddball, makeshift, temporary family unit. It does not take long before Darren finds out, and becomes even more determined to ruin their lives….
