About this listen

All she wanted was the truth, but she'll wish she never found out.

When Catherine wakes up alone one morning, she thinks her husband has gone for a run before work. But Simon never makes it to the office. His running shoes are by the front door. Nothing is missing - except him.

Catherine knows Simon must be in trouble. He wouldn't just leave her. He wouldn't leave the children.

But Simon knows the truth - about why he left and what he's done. He knows things about his marriage that it would kill Catherine to find out. The memories she holds onto are lies.

While Catherine faces a dark new reality at home, Simon's halfway around the world, alive and thriving. He's doing whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of the truth.

But he can't hide forever, and when he reappears twenty-five years later, Catherine will finally learn who he is.

And wish she'd stayed in the dark.

Tragic story

First, this book was well written. I really enjoyed getting into the characters thought processes and having an understanding of their motivations. at times this really did slow down the pace of the book but having these understandings is very important to the story.

Having said that, getting to know the male protagonist was very unpleasant. There's nothing at all that about him that I liked, not even as a villain. A good villain has qualities that, even if I don't agree with it, I understand it. With this guy, he just came across as a dumb idiot and I quickly became tired of him.

The overall story was certainly dramatic & over the top. So many things happened to this couple, you definitely have to suspend some belief.

I think if the characterization of the husband included some humanity other than him being so selfish, I would have enjoyed the story better.

The ending!

It started off a bit slow for me and I wasn’t sure if I had chosen the right book for me. I’m glad I stuck with it. The story and characters were so well written. The ending left me absolutely shocked.

An Emotional Rollercoaster

Dark and twisted doesn't begin to describe this book. Reader beware this an extremely disturbing and interesting book. Do not listen while driving.

Pretty Good!

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. I like this author, who writes with a deliciously sinister flair. I listened to one of his other books, THE ONE, which I thought was excellent, and am quite surprised that it didn’t get more of a listener following. I plan to listen to his other audiobooks as well, many of which are “read and listen for free” through Kindle Unlimited.

I will say that, as far as the story itself, I kind of felt that I was listening to an abridged version of the book. That is to say, it was a very good story with many good themes, but I think the author could have taken more time and really developed the story into something really exceptional. Of course that would have made it a much longer story, but....

As far as the narration, both narrators were quite acceptable. The voice of Elizabeth Knowelden was pleasant enough, soft and easy to listen to, and I am always a sucker for a British accent. I thought Simon Mattacks spoke a little too fast, as if he were in a hurry to get through it all. I found his rendition of an American accent quite amusing! I don’t normally hear a Brit imitating an American accent (usually it’s the other way around!) so that in and of itself really tickled me. He did a pretty good job, too, although he really had a tendency to slip in and out of his native British accent in the middle of it all.

All in all, this was a good listen, unique and original, and definitely worth the time.

A reflection of himself!

loved this book. It definitely is not what I thought it would, a killer on the loose, so much more.

Keeps you guessing.

What a great book. The individual character stories are fascinating, but how they all come together in the end is amazing story telling. A really, really good book.

Slow burn

It took me a long time to get into the story. I really liked the last 1/3.
