About this listen

Professor George Edward Challenger summons 3 friends to his home with a strange request: bring your own oxygen. The even stranger reason: Challenger has discovered the Earth is about to pass through a poisonous belt of ether, and all living things are destined to die unless they can protect themselves. Can the 4 men's small supply of oxygen last until the Earth clears the poison belt?Public Domain (P)1996 Recorded Books, Inc. Editorial reviews

Audiobooks sometimes recall our attention to works that have fallen into undeserved obscurity. Producers may simply be looking for material in the public domain, but occasionally they dust off a gem. The science in Conan Doyle's 1913 tale of global cataclysm is dated but not sloppy. The storytelling is state of the art. The writing has the flavor of the nineteenth century, a time when authors seem to have listened to themselves and tended to produce writing that is friendly to the tongue. The style is somewhat old-fashioned to modern ears and voices, but Paul Hecht sounds absolutely at home as he skillfully guides our rediscovery of a forgotten treasure.

Critic reviews

"Even Doyle preferred Challenger to Sherlock Holmes, and chances are you will too." (Denver Post)

This title was only available in format 1 (8MB) or 2 (12MB) and the quality is simply terrible. Sadly this version wastes talented actor Paul Hecht whose words you can barely make out. Sounds like one of those people without a larynx who use the microphone to talk. Why not make these titles available in larger better quality files???
