About this listen

Yawning, lip-licking, sneezing, even scratching are just a few of the 30-plus signals that dogs use to communicate with one another.

With On Talking Terms With Dogs, you can learn to recognize these signals and use them yourself to interact with your dog. Norwegian dog trainer and behaviorist Turid Rugaas has made it her life work to study canine social interaction. She coined the phrase calming signals to describe the social skills, sometimes referred to as body language, that dogs use to avoid conflict, invite play, and communicate a wide range of information to other dogs and also humans.

Every dog needs his human to listen to this book! Learn to identify situations that are stressful to your dog, so that you can resolve or avoid them. Rehabilitate a dog that has lost her ability to read or give calming signals. Become a keen observer of canine behavior at home, in the community, and among dogs to get better behavior and build a solid relationship.

Really fascinating & helpful description and discussion of the body language that dogs use to communicate with each other, and how to help them rediscover the calming signals they may have lost through adversity. I am so impressed by Rugaas' love and respect for all dogs.

I liked this book. My only disappointment was it was too short. I am a cat lover by heart and a dog lover by balance. I was amazed at all the signals dogs give that I misread. I knew cats communicate by almost every body part , but had no idea dogs are the same communicators. I will most definitely be communicating different with dogs. The ending was heartwarming when he talks about a mommy’s love for her puppies.

What an enlightening and refreshing guide to better understanding how our dogs yearn to adapt to us and how special they are with how they socialize with other dogs and us. This revealed so much clarity for how my older pup, Bella, ran the show, in our home, in the yard, the dog park, etc. Dogs are amazing and this book is too.

"On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas is a must-read for any dog owner who wants to improve their relationship with their canine companion.
