About this listen

Bold and clever, the Cavanaughs are unlike any other family in early Victorian England. Number one New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Laurens continues to explore the enthralling world of these dynamic siblings in the eagerly anticipated second volume in her captivating series.

A gentleman of means.

One of the most eligible bachelors in London, Lord Christopher “Kit” Cavanaugh has discovered his true path, and it doesn’t include the expected society marriage. Kit is all business and has chosen the bustling port of Bristol to launch his passion - Cavanaugh Yachts.

A woman of character.

Miss Sylvia Buckleberry’s passion is her school for impoverished children. When a new business venture forces the school out of its building, she must act quickly. But confronting Kit Cavanaugh is a daunting task made even more difficult by their first and only previous meeting, when, believing she’d never see him again, she’d treated him dismissively. Still, Sylvia is determined to be persuasive.

An unstoppable duo.

But it quickly becomes clear there are others who want the school - and Cavanaugh Yachts - closed. Working side by side, Kit and Sylvia fight to secure her school and to expose the blackguard trying to sabotage his business. Yet an even more dastardly villain lurks, one who threatens the future both discover they now hold dear.

Not hot and heavy nor high adventure but entertaining

If you like high adventure like many of her books, that’s not here. If you like one hot love scene after another, not here either. But if you enjoy watching characters develop, description, happy endings, and a pleasant way to escape the aggravation of real life, go for it!

Asking myself if it will be finished soon.

Not one of her best books. The plot was rather tedious and predictable. It would have been better pruned to novella length.

Where is Stephanie Laurens?

Who wrote this book? This isn’t like any of the books I’ve been enjoying for years. The reader is the most priggish deliverer I’ve heard yet. Bulk of the story is so stilted and unrealistic that I was tempted to delete it. One dimensional characters who spout trite speeches and simplistic “problems” that seem to be “solved” with arrogance rather than any demonstrable critical thinking. Too bad her editor hadn’t read previous books.

Better than many

This is the last Stephanie Laurens books I have in my library. 47 in total. Typical I accumulate copies so I can binge. When I start a series I purchase missing books at full price if I enjoyed the prior ones in the series. I did that with the Cynster books. Unfortunately, SL seldom has new ideas and her books start to all sound the same except for the Christmas ones. They were different though not exciting. I had to force myself through about 2 dozen books because I paid for the audiobook. I will never listen to one again.

This sounds familiar...

If you’ve heard or read the preceding book The Designs of Lord Randolph Cavanaugh, then you’ve heard this book. Same type of characters, same storyline, same type of suspense, and I do mean exactly the same, and for every character in the preceding book, there’s the exact same type of character in this book just with a different name and possibly a different gender. It’s really quite remarkable how Laurens just used the same storyline and gave it a new title. I’d suggest you save your money, it’s boring and repetitive. I used to love Stephanie Laurens, but if she’s just going to be regurgitate the same storyline, then I’m not wasting my money.

BORING!!!

This is seriously the most boring book I have ever listened to. The first book in the series was GREAT and I had high expectations for this one but it was awful. I have already purchased the third book in the series and if it was still within the timeframe to be returned, I would do it. It’s unfortunate, because the narrator does an excellent job! I don’t know how he did such a good job with such a boring storyline. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for good books by this author? I believe she is a good author, but this story was just a total dud.

Marginal at best

Much to be desired in a period romantic story

Narrating was weak at best.Voices did not match the characters.
The characters where redundant in their thoughts.
Certainly have no desire to listen to another story by this author nor listen to any story being read by the narrators.
