About this listen

"A compulsively delicious" (Redbook) debut with a magical twist about three ordinary, regular girls who suddenly have their fantasies comes true...or do they?

Best friends Evie, Krista, and Willow are just trying to make it through their mid-twenties in New York. They're regular girls, with regular looks and typical quarter-life crises: making it up the corporate ladder, making sense of online dating, and making rent.

Idealistic Evie, a copyeditor at a glossy women's magazine, has her feminist story ideas shot down by her glamazon boss; starlet wannabe and confirmed drama magnet Krista just can't get her big break; and artistic, sensitive Willow is veering into self-destructive behaviors, keeping her would-be boyfriend at arm's length and her secrets hidden.

All this changes when they come across the Pretty, a magic tincture that makes them, well...gorgeous. Like, supermodel gorgeous. And it's certainly not their fault if the sudden gift of beauty causes unexpected doors to open for them.

Wildly irreverent, blatantly sexy, and observed with pitch-perfect wit, The Regulars is a fresh and funny debut from an exciting voice in fiction.

So-So Feminist Chick Lit?

The book definitely gives you a lot to think about in terms of how women perceive themselves or are perceived by society. I definitely kept thinking about how the book mirrored itself in so many ways. Willow's relationship with Mark was mirrored by Evie's relationship with Velma, and Krista's relationship with Tristan. I also thought it was so interesting that all three girls had careers which were reflected in the visual arts.

I went back and forth about Evie's relationship with feminism. Sometimes I found it oppressing, and at other times I felt that she completely disregarded the values--which I'm sure was a conscious choice by the author, but I think they came at unexpected (and therefore jarring) times. You would expect Khloe to be less feminist than Evie, but then Evie sometimes seem to have trouble understanding feminism in a female homosexual relationship.

I was a little disappointed with the ending. Certainly, I was pleased with Evie's reaction to the Pretty. And the Velma story wrapped up in a completely realistic portrayal of real life. On the other hand, I was really disappointed with how things ended between Krista and Tristan. And Willow's relationship with Mark felt incomplete to me. (Although don't ask me what else I wanted from it.)

Overall, while I didn't think it was a waste of my time, I certainly wouldn't re-read it again, and if I could go back in time I would have borrowed the book from the library instead of purchasing it outright. If you're interested in reading it and looking for something lighthearted and fun, this isn't it. It's chick-lit with an edge. It's reality TV with a hint of fantasy thrown in.

Cute premise - bad writing

Ridiculous. I thought the premise of the book was interesting and might be a fun listen. Unfortunately the writing was so sophomoric and the "love stories" so silly I could get through it and returned the book. On a positive note the narrator did a good job with the material she was given. It was just bad material.

Imaginative, hilarious modern day Fairytale!

This book was a rollercoaster from start to finish! Full of great, fresh and funny moments and more reflective, sadder moments too.

Characters were realistic and lovable. Overall a very fun, easy going, and interesting read! I would definitely recommend to somebody that likes rom coms and sci fi or fantasy! Lots of great feminist themes and moments too that made the book more intellectually stimulating too.

Terrible!

I couldn’t finish this audiobook! The story was terrible and the characters were shallow and unrelatable.
