Publisher's summary

From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively enjoyable as in New York Times and number one international best-selling author Christina Lauren's (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You/Hating You) new romance.

Marriages of convenience are so...inconvenient.

Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway - until he admits his student visa has expired and he's in the country illegally.

Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, December 2017

It's no secret that I'm a massive Christina Lauren fan, so when I saw that their latest stand-alone novel, Roomies, was coming out in December I jumped at the chance to make it my editor pick. In fact, I even re-listened to Beautiful Bastard - the first book in their popular series by the same name - to get me in the right frame of mind. Unlike Beautiful Bastard, however, Roomies has a surprising innocence to it that caught me off guard. Twenty-five-year-old Holland is stumbling her way through adulthood, and she shocks even herself when she decides to save her uncle's Broadway show by marrying the sexy Irish guitarist he wants to hire for the orchestra - who happens to be in the country illegally. Their slow-burning relationship, and Holland's own journey of self-discovery, was charming, natural, and completely real to this subway riding, Broadway obsessed NYC gal. PS, K. C. Sheridan needs to narrate more - her Irish accent is officially my new obsession. —Katie, Audible Editor

Well

I liked the story for the most part. The story was well written, the characters seemed original, the drama was, of course, there but not overwhelming and over the top. I liked the heroine’s growth over the book, her realization of some hard truths, and she was also relatable. Here’s my issue and why I took away a star; I wasn’t sold on the narration. I can’t think of the best way to describe it, but it almost seemed like she had trouble differentiating between her American accents and her Irish accents. I’m not really an accent snob here, but it was noticeable to me. The main thing that stood out was that some statements she made seemed almost like questions. Anyway, it was okay.

Excellent

Enjoyed every minute of this book. The story was easy to follow, had a great story line, the narrator did an excellent job.
The story itself was great, made me laugh and smile and cry in different parts. It was amazing.

Love yourself first

The moral of this story is that you really need to love yourself before you try to love someone else because if you don't all you're going to do is project your insecurities onto them. I really loved the story but the main character was really king of getting on my nerves with her lack of confidence and fear of talking about her feelings. But other that, I enjoyed it. Also the narrator must have been actually Irish because you could hear the accent in every character.

Couldn't get past the narrator

A cute story, but pretty predictable. The narrator was pretty awful, I had a hard time listening to the end. I'll avoid purchasing audibles that are narrated by her again.

Pretty good

3/5 stars. I love these authors. I didn’t connect with this book like I have with their other books, such as Beautiful Bastard.

The main female character, Holland, was likeable at first, but (although I stuck with it until the end) they lost me about half way through because of her bizarre reactions and decisions.

I liked the narrator‘s Irish accent.

good book, alright performance.

The narrator has an Irish accent, so listening to her switch characters was sometimes difficult because her natural accent would come out and I wouldn't know who was supposed to be speaking. it was a good book though!

Grade A for the performance

Okay so I usually hate when audiobooks have a main character with an accent because the narrator can never get the accent right and it kind of ruins the book for me. Not this book- I think Sheridan was actually Irish and if not she did a spot on Irish accent.

Besides that, the book was really good! I don’t think there was really any like slow spots, I was interested the whole time and the two main characters are adorable. Great read!
