About this listen

From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively enjoyable as in New York Times and number one international best-selling author Christina Lauren's (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You/Hating You) new romance.

Marriages of convenience are so...inconvenient.

Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway - until he admits his student visa has expired and he's in the country illegally.

Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, December 2017

It's no secret that I'm a massive Christina Lauren fan, so when I saw that their latest stand-alone novel, Roomies, was coming out in December I jumped at the chance to make it my editor pick. In fact, I even re-listened to Beautiful Bastard - the first book in their popular series by the same name - to get me in the right frame of mind. Unlike Beautiful Bastard, however, Roomies has a surprising innocence to it that caught me off guard. Twenty-five-year-old Holland is stumbling her way through adulthood, and she shocks even herself when she decides to save her uncle's Broadway show by marrying the sexy Irish guitarist he wants to hire for the orchestra - who happens to be in the country illegally. Their slow-burning relationship, and Holland's own journey of self-discovery, was charming, natural, and completely real to this subway riding, Broadway obsessed NYC gal. PS, K. C. Sheridan needs to narrate more - her Irish accent is officially my new obsession. —Katie, Audible Editor

Okay so I usually hate when audiobooks have a main character with an accent because the narrator can never get the accent right and it kind of ruins the book for me. Not this book- I think Sheridan was actually Irish and if not she did a spot on Irish accent.

Besides that, the book was really good! I don’t think there was really any like slow spots, I was interested the whole time and the two main characters are adorable. Great read!

Grade A for the performance

Im a fan of the authors but the story had no feeling to me. The narration was all over the place with the Irish accent and the ending just dragged on with ancillary characters and convenient friends at immigration. This could have been so much more as it was reminiscent of sweet filthy boy . It was an ok book but i know they can do better than this.

Meh

I only read this book because it was featured on a bookstagram’s reel for books that will be movies and I wasn’t expecting much but wow was I surprised. I LOVED this book. I found myself laughing out loud and feeling giddy. I finished this in less than one day. Definitely recommend this romance.

What did you like about this audiobook?

NO, because it wasn't what I expected. It was to focused on what Holland inner turmoil, and I would have liked a bit more of Calvin's story.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

none

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

not really, I wanted to know more about Calvin.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

she wasn't vocally gripping when I feel she should be.

needed more room

Loved this. The narrator has a few places where you can tell she is more Irish than American (syllable emphasis, tone) but you get used to it and keep listening because you just can’t get enough. I was sick with pneumonia while listening and loved getting to lay in bed all day with this book.

Well blow me down

Thank god for Christina Lauren. K.C. Sheridan too. Prowling around at home for weeks now, reading books, watching Netflix, downloading new podcasts, all between story after story, lists and rules and warnings — sensory overload! But I immediately relaxed when I started listening to Roomies — there is something so comfortable about the world of Christine Lauren, I know I can just lean back, slip into the angsty shoes of the protagonist and ride the tingly, happy, sexy rollercoaster to a beautiful HEA. The hero is more sensitive, funny, sweet, understanding, adoring and devoted than any other man, woman, dog or cat than I can imagine, and it’s just what I neee. They write it so easily believable that I can just slip into it and forget the world for a while, especially with this great narrator whose accent slips charmingly once in a while. Pandemic? What pandemic? Corona who? ;) Highly recommended.

Absolutely loved this book. Excellent job! Loved the characters! They all seem so real. Will listen to it again and again.

Not predictable at all!

The story felt like something was missing. It didn’t feel like their love was believable.

I honestly could not stop listening...I’m going to be struggling to stay awake tomorrow but it was worth staying up so late to finish!

Incredible!

The story was just ok, some funny parts made it worthwhile. The narrator was terrible.

Just meh
