About this listen

Groundhog Day meets One Day in December in this funny and romantic novel about a couple who call off their wedding after a disastrous rehearsal dinner—only to wake up the next morning stuck in a time loop.

Two people. One wedding. No end in sight.

Megan Givens and Tom Prescott are heading into what is supposed to be their magical wedding weekend on beautiful San Juan Island. But with two difficult families, ten years of history, and all too many secrets, things quickly go wrong. After a disastrous rehearsal dinner they vow to call the whole thing off—only to wake up the next morning stuck together in a time loop. Are they really destined to relive the worst day of their lives, over and over? And what happens if their wedding day does arrive?

A funny, romantic, and big-hearted debut novel, The Rehearsals imagines what we might do if given a second chance at life and at love—and what it means to finally get both right.

Critic reviews

“A funny, clever, enchanting story about finding our way back to ourselves and to those we truly love. It had me spellbound from the first page.... The Rehearsals is refreshingly honest about the ups and downs of long-term relationships, whether romantic or family, handling its themes with wit and zest. Terrific fun from beginning to end!” (Sarah Haywood, author of the New York Times best seller and Reese Witherspoon X Hello Sunshine Book Club pick The Cactus)

"A truly absorbing read, told with wit and heart, and impossible to put down. Annette Christie is a master of creating characters that feel like friends, where you hate to turn that last page and say goodbye." (Jen DeLuca, author of Well Met)

"Christie's sparkling and witty debut explores the tangled web of the night before a wedding. Through Tom and Megan, we discover the importance of second or more chances, and how learning to listen (to others and yourself) is the key to love and happiness." (Roselle Lim, author of Natalie Tan's Book of Luck and Fortune and Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop)

Absolutely loved it!

I was drawn to this book bc I love Amanda Troop’s voice and I’m a big fan of time travel plots lol. It was cool that her name was Meg in this and she also voiced Meg in the Disney Hercules twisted tale. With most time travel books, one needs to suspend disbelief from page one. I thought it had the perfect mixture of adult themes and language. It was not G rated but also not vulgar. Very nice balance!

I also loved that it was told in the third person and from both their perspectives. I hate first person and only seeing into one person’s head. I found myself vehemently on Tom’s side for the most part but as the intricate story continued, I found myself forgiving Meg with him. The writing is very well done. Excellent description of ppl and places. I felt like I’d been there for their entire relationship! But their background was not a data dump, it was a slow, calculated trickle. There are big vocabulary words sprinkled throughout the novel, some of which I actually had to look up to my astonishment. As an avid reader, english major and aspiring writer, this is not a frequent occurrence lol. I am surprised that this is Christie’s first novel, it was so well done!

I love books where ppl have been together for so long. My husband and I are high school sweethearts so Meg and Tom’s bond really spoke to me. We also had emotionally unstable parents who tried desperately to no avail to break us up. I really think every couple in the world can benefit from reading this book. It shows that forgiveness is possible, people can change and how we should avoid all or nothing thinking. When it comes to fight or flight, most ppl choose the latter but it doesn’t always have to be that way.

(Spoilers) It was really hard for me to get passed Meg’s betrayal when it was initially mentioned and I fought not to instantly dislike her. Old me would have stopped reading after that. I just could not relate to her bc I would never do something like that myself nor harbor it for 8 years like she did. But ppl are different, just as the book goes on to show.

I hated both their families so much but they were so well written to be the essential villains of the story. I grew up spoiled and even the simplest of decisions were always made for me, making me helpless and constantly obsessed with what others thought. This made me really able to relate to Tom. I was so proud of him when he finally made his own choices and put up long overdue boundaries with his family.

The means of the time loop remains unknown but it is very well done. I’m glad that they both experienced it instead of just one and I think that 7 days was the perfect choice. It’s truly amazing how much they both learned and fixed in this short time. While time travel is impossible, change is and anyone can do it if they are willing to try. This book also shows how essential communication is, something so many of us avoid. Lack of communication and understanding is a recipe for disaster.

I was very happy when Meg finally saw Leo for what he was, just a possible escape and an escape seems easier sometimes than actually fixing existing problems. And ew seriously, what a creep showing up as the best man while simultaneously planning to blindside and steal the bride. I’m so glad Tom told him to leave and broke off their friendship. I don’t think Leo really loved Meg either, she was just a loose thread that he clung to whenever he felt lost. Sometimes it may seem like jumping ship is best when a relationship gets rough but new does not always mean BETTER. I am so glad that Meg was able to realize this. They didn’t need new lives and loves, they just needed to improve their existing one together. Meg and Tom forever ♥️

I was so pleased with the ending and it really made me cry! I def recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, time travel or either of the narrators. All of this combined makes for a lovely story! I hope to see more from this creative author.

Would make a great movie

I loved this story. It was fun and light hearted. I thought the storyline was pretty creative and I liked how they worked through their different story lines. It would be a great film adaptation. I have the whole book movie cast.

Wish I could return

The story was decent despite the swear words, but once they dropped the f word I was done. I've searched multiple times but can't find where to get my money back. I assume it's because I bought the book on sale. Only made it to chapter 7... oh well
