About this listen

Two exes reach a new level of awkward when forced to take a road trip together in this endearing and humorous novel by the author of the international best seller The Flatshare.

What if the end of the road is just the beginning?

Four years ago, Dylan and Addie fell in love under the Provence sun. Wealthy Oxford student Dylan was staying at his friend Cherry’s enormous French villa; wild child Addie was spending her summer as the on-site caretaker. Two years ago, their relationship officially ended. They haven’t spoken since.

Today, Dylan’s and Addie’s lives collide again. It’s the day before Cherry’s wedding, and Addie and Dylan crash cars at the start of the journey there. The car Dylan was driving is wrecked, and the wedding is in rural Scotland - he’ll never get there on time by public transport.

So, along with Dylan’s best friend, Addie’s sister, and a random guy on Facebook who needed a ride, they squeeze into a space-challenged Mini and set off across Britain. Cramped into the same space, Dylan and Addie are forced to confront the choices they made that tore them apart - and ask themselves whether that final decision was the right one after all.

Critic reviews

"THIS BOOK IS PERFECT.” (Rosie Walsh, best-selling author of Ghosted)

“As with her surprise hit, The Flatshare, O’Leary expertly balances humor and heart while introducing a zany cast of 20-somethings.... Readers won’t want this crazy road trip to end.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The Road Trip is a humorous yet deeply moving journey toward confronting the past, forgiveness, and reconciliation, with a poignant detour to a summer of young love in Provence. I loved the vivid cast and the depth and intimacy in O’Leary’s writing.” (Helen Hoang, USA Today best-selling author)

It takes more than great storytelling to be the right fit for each type of road trip. What works for a cross-country adventure may not be quite right for a quick day trip. What you listen to with your significant other may not be (read: is definitely not) the same as what you listen to with a carload of kids. And when driving solo, sometimes what you want is a little company. No matter what kind of journey you have coming up, we’ve got you covered.

Good Story, Rough Story

Beth is a great storyteller. I enjoy her writing very much. This story was rough with flawed characters and bits of humor sprinkled in. People are flawed and I am glad Beth shared this story with us. It did take me a bit to get used to the then and now jumps, especially in audio but it worked. Thank you Beth.

lovely story of growing up and 2nd chances

This book is brilliantly narrated. The fears/vices quite relatable. The humor was timely. And the specifically unique characters, memorable. I am charmed.

Not The Flatshare but still good

Not as enjoyable or funny as TFS, but still a well-written, thought-provoking, suspenseful romance.

Cringey young relationship stuff

The story of early 20s relationships was relatable—but nothing I was too eager to revisit! And as seems so common in this genre, half of the characters are ultra rich and have some dull rich-people problems with bad dads. It also used trauma as a major plot point to inject some gravitas—which is a cheap tactic to try to give the story substance where there is none. I liked O’Leary’s previous book, “The Flatshare,” but this one is far less charming. Even though it’s all about character development, the characters still seem flat. Not bad but very missable.

Brilliant writing, great story!

Her characters are so real. Often times authors pain their characters very one dimensionally. This is not the case with this or any of Beth O’Leary’s books. Even the worst of her characters has a side that we can relate to, a softer side. This book is heartwarming, funny, with so many turns that you just don’t expect. I am sad that I finished. I loved this book!

Pretty good

At first I wasn't sure about this book. Started out really slow with lots of questions. But then as the story starts to unravel and you get to know the characters more, it becomes a real page turner. I love the emotion that grips the reader and the longing to know more. Very satisfying over all
