About this listen

Gritty noir fiction, mind-bending fantasy, and medical thriller combine in a new novel by an author dubbed the "cyberpunk Dashiell Hammett".

Sweeney is a druggist by trade; Danny, his son, is in a persistent coma, the victim of an accident. Hoping for a miracle, they have come to the Peck Clinic, a fortress-like haven in a post-industrial city overrun by gangs. Doctors there claim to have resurrected two patients who were similarly lost in the void.

Gradually, Sweeney realizes that the cure for his son's condition may lie in "Limbo", a fantasy comic-book world into which Danny had been drawn at the time of his accident. Plunged into the intrigue that surrounds the clinic, Sweeney searches for answers and instead finds sinister back alleys, brutal dead ends, and terrifying rabbit holes of mystery.

Full of puzzles and surprises, Resurrectionist is a surreal, gothic meditation on identity, the nature of consciousness, the power of stories, love, mad scientists, circus freaks, and ultimately forgiveness - both giving and receiving.

Critic reviews

" The Resurrectionist - a brilliantly tuned, mesmerizing labyrinth of a quasi-real world as only a master artist could draw it - will jazz you, floor you, grab you and shake you and leave you hung out to dry in that world. A brilliant break-through novel." (James Ellroy)

Sorry, Jack, Not Your Best Work...

Do not waste your time on this audiobook. There are SOOOO many more worthy listens here at audible.

A rambling mishmash of a plot combined with shallow characters and a utter dependence on the backdrop as a character, this is a waste of your Audible credits. Again, use them on a better choice.

The Abomination

One extra star to this book for being creative, but that's about all I can say for it. The plot is nonsensical, the characters react in completely unrealistic ways, and the book employs that irritating plot device wherein the protagonist is really dimwitted, making it easy to spell everything out for the reader. Fantasy is ok; people reacting in a totally unrealistic manner is not.

Yuck1

It started off with a good premise. Father moves son who is in a coma to a hospital known for bringing patients out of their comas---but then the story keeps jumping to comic book heroes and their adventures (the son loved these action figures). I lost interest in that fast--never did find out what happened to the guy's son--the story was too weird for me. Another wasted credit!

Irresistably engrossing

Night after night after my commute home, this novel had me sitting in my driveway not wanting to stop listening.

Holter Graham deserves top credit for bringing the characters to life, but it is Jack O'Connell's fervid imagination and descriptive wizardry that makes this fiction darkly cinematic and intensely personal. Like the main character, I felt like I had been dropped into a labyrithine universe and left to find my own way out ... and I'm not totally sure I did. Every turn revealed new surprises and engrossing puzzles.

Audible needs to ask Holter Graham to record the rest of Jack O'Connell's novels right away.

What the heck was that?

It's really a shame that such an obviously talented writer -- the book uses absolutely beautiful language -- decided to write such a train wreck of a book. Jumping between a dismal, chaotic, and rather annoying reality, to a mildly engrossing, yet ultimately pointless fantasy world, The Ressurectionist, is a total mess. I really wish I could have gotten those hours back that I spent listening to it.

Dont waste your time

I was terribly disappointed in this book. It had potential to be really good, but the ending was just dumb. I was left confused and unsatisfied. I am sorry I spent my credit on this.

Why oh Why????

Why did I listen to this whole novel? I kept thinking each new twist would lead to more explanation. Instead the novel just kept getting more bizarre and confusing. One think about the book I have to mention.... it sure made me think! Think about what a waste of time.... What did it mean? Who CARES! Save your money and even more important your time!

Perfect in every way.

This audio book is like nothing I have yet experienced and I do not know where to begin to describe it. From the first paragraph I was completely drawn into the wonderfully realized world this excellent author has crafted. The closest comparison I can make is perhaps Peter Straub at his best. If you are a fan of Michael Chabons THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY and Tom DeHavens ITs SUPERMAN you will more than likely love this story. The joy of listening is deeply accentuated by the outstanding narrator who has crafted a superb experience. Definitely one of my best ever listens, entertaining and thoughtfull literature.

absolutely different

As a lover of "imaginative" fiction, which includes horror, sci fi, fantasy for the last 40 plus years, I found this book to be completely different than anything I've read.
It has a wonderful Gothic constant feeling, but not taking place in any universe that that feeling would or should occur.
I was up all night listening to it. There is not one single turn or curve or event that you can predict what is going to happen.
The author was perfect in his rendition of his ideas and the Reader excellently chosen.
The author is a deep, clear thinker, and his "theories" that makes up the foundation of this story are well thought out and delivered.
I have a small list of authors whose works I will buy immediately without review, and this author is one.
