About this listen

London, 1888: Jack the Ripper begins his reign of terror. Miss Sarah Bain, a photographer, supplements her meager income by taking illicit boudoir photographs of the town's local ladies of the night. But when two of her models are found gruesomely murdered within weeks of one another, Sarah begins to suspect it's more than mere coincidence. Teamed with a motley crew of friends - including a street urchin, a gay aristocrat, a Jewish butcher and his wife, and a beautiful young actress - Sarah delves into the crime of the century. But just as she starts unlocking the Ripper's secrets, she catches the attention of the local police, who believe she knows more than she's revealing, and the Ripper himself, who's bent on silencing her for good.

Erotic Mystery!

Maybe I missed the signs when previewing for purchase, but content and theme is bordering on erotic situations. I like my mystery without romance or secondary to mystery. But this was neither and so I’m passing and returned.

Thoroughly entertaining!

I am a huge fan of Ripper inspired fiction, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Ripper's Shadow! Laura Joh Rowland crafts a memorable, and absorbing tale-- filled with twists and turns, disturbing details, and a scenes that made me blush. I listened to this book on audible, and the narration was very well done.

I look forward to reading (or listening to), the next in the series.

Vulnerable Heroine + Creepy = Awesome!

Laura Joh Rowland is one of my favorite historical fiction mystery writers. 😍 Her descriptions of London & the horrific phenomena of Jack the Ripper made me feel like I was there.
The protaganist was relatable as person forced to overcome her personal issues due to extreme circumstances.
A great character arc of all the players, including creepy old Jack himself!🙈

Really not a good book.

I really thought this book was horrible. I was very disappointed bc I have read other books in this genre during this time period and really liked them. The idea was fresh. The application of it was horrible though. There are so many plot holes in this book that I can't even tell you them without giving spoilers. The narrator wasn't awful, but she was uneven. I couldn't even finish the book it was that bad.

Trite

"I should stay away from my friends because everything I touch turns sour. My friends have no agency since evidently everything they do is because of me." How horribly boring. Can this trope just die? The main character's insipid, constant whining made this already too long book feel like a slog.

AWFUL!

So gross. There should be some warning of the evil one who doesn't like so much sexual abuse .

Awful. Avoid

Ham fisted use of tortured metaphors coupled with weak uninterested characters makes this a tortured read.
