About this listen

Formerly Amish, Tilly Lantz Barrows and her younger sister Ruth Lantz find themselves plagued by the memories of their family's trauma when they return to Eden Valley for their parents' landmark wedding anniversary. Each woman carries a burden of past guilt, unknown to the other, along with unresolved relationships with their six married brothers...and aging parents. Headstrong Tilly urged Ruth to flee the People as well, welcoming her into the fancy English world. Neither had joined the Amish church. Tilly has since married and is the mother of identical twin girls. But Ruth remains single, still smarting from a failed courtship with her first beau. When she sees Will Kauffman again, old feelings resurface, leaving her to ponder anew how things might be different had she stayed in Lancaster County. Meanwhile, Tilly is faced with a life-altering discovery that calls everything she knows into question. As past meets present, Tilly and Ruth struggle to find redemption and embrace acceptance. Can they face the future in the light of a past they can't undo.

Very enjoyable clean story.

I very much enjoyed the craft of the writing, and the performance was outstanding. I could really hear the various voices in Eden Valley.

good book

If you could sum up The River in three words, what would they be?

This book is beautifully written and well read. The only thing I disliked was the reader's many yawns during the reading. If she's tired she should rest and come back to it. It took a little something from it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ruth. Because I like her name. All of them were good.

Which character – as performed by Christina Moore – was your favorite?

Ruth. She bought forth the character's sweet nature.

If you could rename The River, what would you call it?

Not sure right now but I don't like the title given it.

Best one yet!

I’ve read and listened to many of Beverly Lewis books. THIS one was my favorite! I’ve cried, laughed and cried some more. I usually can figure out the ending before I’m finished but this one had me til the end. I would LOVE for a second book on this!

Sloooww

I made it to chapter 13 and I still had no idea what the deal was between her and her family. It’s just got boring so I gave up on it.

Heartwarming

and Ruth are former Amish plain people who have left the community and joined the English life. They are called back home for their family’s anniversary and their father’s failing health. They must fast the ghost of their past and what drove them to leave their family all those years ago.

This One Sucks

A lot of it makes no sense. The characters responses don't add up with either.
