About this listen

Henry of Monmouth, Prince Hal, is barely recovered from a near-fatal wound when his father leaves him to retake his land.

Owain Glendower and Edmund Mortimer, however, have French allies and the most inhospitable landscape to aid them. All that Prince Hal has to guide him is the guardian of kings, Will Strongstaff. The two of them have to fight treachery and those who count money as well as more traditional enemies, the Welsh archers.

As the two of them fight together the young prince learns the skills which will help him in the fullness to time to not only defeat but to crush and humiliate the French at the Battle of Agincourt. This is the story of how a prince became a general and how he learned to fight!

This is the second of Mr Hosker’s books I’ve listened to on Audible. The story is very enjoyable—well paced with plenty of action, humor, & character interaction to keep the listener engaged. The characters themselves are a bit tropic but fit well enough within the narrative. The story generally follows what I know of as the history of the period with the fictional protagonist being at the center of important events. The story includes real historical figures including king Henry IV, Henry of Monmouth (later Henry V), the earl of northumberland & a few other Percy’s, & John the fearless of Burgundy. The personalities of some of these figures don’t mesh with what I’ve read about them but but I’m no expert. I think most people who find this period of history interesting should give this book & author a try: they’d likely enjoy it.

A solid, fun read.

These stories are far too short at least by half. A loyal listener feels shaken down for dollars. I know others have expressed the same sentiment. Keep in mind the fickle follower.

Feel like Strongstaff

Thoroughly enjoyable. From battle scenes to everyday life of early 15th century this well paced historical fiction entertains as well as educates. I recommend this whole series.
The performance by Marston York is, as always, excellent .

Great history told via a story of a soldier.

Books are formulaic but entertain. The performance was very very good. Simple pleasure to enjoy at bed time.

Another book - same story - but entertaining
