After one year of marriage, Crown Prince Arthur and his lovely, albeit accident-prone wife, Princess Tessa, are preparing to bring an heir to the tiny kingdom of Avonia. With all eyes on Tessa, she's determined to be one of those fabulously fit pregnant women. She could do it too if it weren't for all the freshly-baked scones. Soon dubbed the Cowntess of Camembert, Tessa wants to go into hiding until after the baby is born, but royal life won't wait, and she needs to figure out how to make the best of a desperate situation and win the people over once and for all.
Prince Arthur never thought he'd find himself involved in horribly awkward conversations about the first day of his wife's last period, but that's precisely what happens after that plus sign shows up on the pregnancy test. With a baby on the way, Arthur's overprotective streak comes out in spades, and he finds himself attributing ill-intentions to everyone he meets, from the vagina-fixated obstetricians to the potential pedos everywhere.
Will Arthur calm down in time to welcome the baby? Will Tessa manage to figure out how to be mother to the kingdom's next heir? And most importantly, will the happy couple still be happy when the baby arrives? Contains mature themes.

(Spoilers) Boy did poor Tessa piss me off in this book but I still loved her every step of the way. I feel so bad how cruel Avonians can be to her in the media and to her face but in a way, it’s Karma for all the bile she spewed about the royals. I love how much Arthur loves her and she also has Gran and Arabella in her corner. I’m so glad bc while Tessa’s family loves her, they are the opposite of supportive and contribute to MUCH of her stress and flaws! They’re entertaining but I just want to barge into the story and scream at them! Arthur and Tessa should be as bluntly honest with them as they are and see how they like it! Unfortunately, the royal couple holds it in until they explode and make themselves look like “the bad guys.”
This book was wonderful but personally painful to read bc I recently miscarried and they supposedly may have been twins. I was still so happy for Tessa but the chapter names upset me as I never made it past 7 weeks. In a way, it was cathartic that I didn’t have to go through Tessa’s hell but it still made me sad. I wonder if the author has ever given birth. It was odd they chose to announce it so early but I guess being in the public eye makes it impossible to hide. I was very concerned about Tessa’s health throughout the book and I would have liked clarity on exactly how much weight she gained. My concern was not her appearance but her actual health. At one point, she said she was projected to gain 100 pounds at this rate and Gran mentioned she would most certainly need surgery to get her figure back. I wasn’t sure if this was all hyperbole or for real! If serious, they really should have ripped the crepes and donuts from her stubborn hands!
It was a good idea to have Brooke pregnant at the same time and to give her some karma for disparaging most pregnant women. For a while, I thought she may have even been lying about being pregnant just to rival Tessa more. The book illustrates Brooke as one extreme and Tessa the other. Again, I don’t think Tessa should have been shamed for her weight gain but it seems like someone in her world besides Xavier should have reached out to help her. It’s unclear if her emergency c section is due to her colossal weight gain. Brooke seems to have a difficult birth but not a dangerous one. It was sweet of Tessa to step up for Brooke in the aftermath and to create her own group instead of joining the perfect moms.
Poor Arthur during this book! I was honestly on his side throughout this story. I cannot believe Tessa thought it was appropriate to sex starve him, regardless of how she was feeling! Even if she wasn’t feeling amorous or sexy, she could have at least given the poor guy something! I think they both would have been less stressed throughout this dramatic tale if they’d kept up on at least some intimacy. I also didn’t like how snippy she was to him throughout, especially after her crazy parents moved in. She def lost her sense of humor until the babies arrived and I hope women reading this can learn that pregnancy does not give you a 9 month trump card to be a raging, celibate shrew. I was SO proud of Tessa when she finally stood up to her family and freaked out on them. I was absolutely soaring when Arthur did the same to them later on but I hate how blamed he was for it. I get that he’s running a country and needs to be the better man but this was a long time coming for the Sharps.
I was happy to see that the Sharp parents seemed to finally learn a bit after Arthur’s tirade. For one, they sent their demon cat away to be tamed. They also agreed to treat Tessa better and be more supportive which they are in the hospital. Evey even knocked and ASKED if they could come in and meet the babies! They didn’t just barge in. That was major progress. I was very pleased with that evolution of the plot, I would have been furious if Arthur was forced to grovel and they still learned nothing. The whole plot with Xavier was wonderful too. I also didn’t expect King Winston to come around and confess what happened with his tragic queen. Feeling pity for him was not on my bingo card!
I’m so glad I found this series. My only complaint is the present tense narrative and the occasional second person pov, when Tessa and Arthur start talking to the reader. That shatters the moment for me. If this was past tense third person all the way, it would be the greatest series ever. But I’m def going to dive into more works of this author and the narrators!
I’m Team Arthur all the way!
